  12. time that Austria was in a in a football
  13. world cup, it was in France in 98 and we
  14. played Chile against Austria and we
  15. tied one-on-one. It was a last minute
  16. goal from Austria. Never forgot that.

  54. sector with renewables now. So how do
  55. you get into the energy sector from
  56. being geoysicist to energy and now in
  57. being energy how was the path
  58. >> the path? The path is I'm a very
  59. curious person. So one of the first
  60. questions I think already in at the
  61. time when I was a kid was how is it
  62. happening or possible that the landscape
  63. is like it is because I'm from the
  64. countryside there are a lot of mountains
  65. and so on. and I did a little bit of
  66. I don't know reading and was
  67. fascinated by this invisible forces
  68. which make this happen meaning there is
  69. heat flows hydro not hydro water
  70. flows there is energy which makes this
  71. entire earth shape as it is shaped and
  72. the landscape as it is and I think based
  73. on this making this invisible visible
  74. I came into this science oriented
  75. study geoysics
  76. >> and actually also make with this the
  77. entry into my career because in the
  78. first part I went into subsurface
  79. imaging. So the first couple of
  80. years I spent on a global basis in
  81. this imaging on this imaging site
  82. where I could make it happen that this
  83. as I said invisible is getting visible
  84. and with this I think this experience
  85. they made sooner or later the step
  86. into exploration and into the oil
  87. operating side. yeah and I think this
  88. curiosity actually brought me then on
  89. the final stage
  90. into the renewable side
  91. >> bringing
  92. economic aspects, technical
  93. aspects physical aspect to together
  94. on a problem solving scale. Yeah.
  95. And that's why I'm there where I'm there
  96. at the moment.
  97. >> And you studied at Mount Leubin.
  98. >> Mount Leon. Yeah. But it's a mining
  99. university in Montana University. That's
  100. the it's a mining university. Yeah.
  101. it's originally all about mining.

  103. >> And geopysics is one of this measures
  104. I would say which you could use in any
  105. kind of mining applications and oil
  106. and gas is also mining. Yeah, exactly.
  107. So yeah, I always stay curious. I think
  108. the curiosity is what makes me drive.
  109. >> Okay, great. But you have had this
  110. extended career in the oil and gas and
  111. before moving into renewable. So how was
  112. it the transition?
  113. >> I think it's it's just a it's just a
  114. matter of
  115. of a of a mindset shift. It's a
  116. decision. You should do it. It's an easy
  117. shift because
  118. >> renewables is not a renewables. so
  119. the basis when it comes to risk
  120. assessment project management
  121. technical aspect data analytics and so
  122. on it's the same on both sides so I
  123. would say 80% is transferable skills
  124. anyway especially that's why I said
  125. renewables is not renewables when it
  126. comes to geothermal it's a nearly
  127. complete shift or direct usage of
  128. your acquired skills. Anyway, it's the
  129. same. It's making the subsurface
  130. visible again the same as in oil and
  131. gas. I think the big biggest difference
  132. is the mindset shift.

  134. >> Because oil and gas is very linear.
  135. you have to focus on extraction. There
  136. is one point where you can which this
  137. point you have to define and then you
  138. explore or extract the big volume of
  139. valuable stuff or gas. and then in
  140. renewables is more it's more a system
  141. thinking what what is needed it's
  142. more about flexibility. so from
  143. linear you have to go to more
  144. multiscalable kind of thinking
  145. to make renewable successful you have to
  146. be you have to create flexible systems
  147. not decline curves which is needed
  148. when you are in oil and gas. I think
  149. that's the main thing. So if you have
  150. your mind shift done, I think then it's
  151. not a problem.
  152. >>. And what was the driver of this
  153. shift?
  154. >> The curiosity.
  155. >> Okay.
  156. >> As I said at the beginning, I think it's
  157. you do something. It's it's a
  158. curiosity to see what's really possible
  159. on the on the other on the good side.
  160. It's not good or bad but on the
  161. renewable side which brought me to the
  162. studies and then and then seeing
  163. seeing
  164. experiencing the impact you can do
  165. then also the environmental discussions
  166. of course going in parallel to the
  167. the current environmental situation
  168. and yeah
  169. >> okay but for the climate also
  170. like the
  171. >> it's It's exactly. So I have my family,
  172. I have my kids. for me it's
  173. worthwhile to invest
  174. invest in on the on the on the on the
  175. technical side where we can have a
  176. positive impact on the climate situation
  177. to make worthwhile environment to
  178. earth also for the next generations I
  179. would say.
  180. >> Yeah, I will say that energy renewable
  181. energy team is happy to have you in this
  182. side. a great acquisition for the team.

  184. >> But also because energy it's still
  185. energy and there's a big side of it
  186. still goes with the oil and gas and you
  187. have worked extensively there. So what
  188. would you say your key contributions
  189. were or key projects that you did in
  190. your career
  191. from
  192. >> at the beginning it's it was all
  193. about very classical approaches
  194. take the best economically driven
  195. approaches to get oil and gas from
  196. locations where we didn't find them
  197. before. So creating projects but on a
  198. later stage of course digitalization
  199. >>
  200. de-risking the project via digital twins
  201. I think that's maybe what I was
  202. driving or was I was working in or
  203. did an impact in before and then on the
  204. on the very last stage also how to
  205. transfer actually knowledge and skills
  206. from from people into newer business
  207. models.
  208. So how to upskill and think and
  209. create solutions to
  210. use and reuse the extensive experience
  211. in oil and gas for new business model
  212. which are maybe upcoming in an oil and
  213. gas and therefore also already having a
  214. look into the renewable side. What can
  215. we use and transfer into the
  216. renewable side? which kind of business
  217. model would make sense to decarbonize
  218. also the oil and gas business because
  219. also there of course is you can do a
  220. lot to decarbonize
  221. >> yeah to find strategic approaches in
  222. this aspects.
  223. >> Yeah. and from the from inside the
  224. the sector from oil and gas sector the
  225. carbon capture played a key role
  226. it's is in the plans for the future the
  227. CC or CCS
  228. >> it's a it's a key role depends on the
  229. country you're in but it has to have a
  230. key key role because it helps us to
  231. store the CO2 which we are normally so
  232. in a in a very natural way getting out
  233. when we are extracting oil and gas and
  234. we have to store it somewhere so that
  235. we can decarbonize also this kind of
  236. business. Yes. it's a key role for
  237. the future. It's a must. just has to
  238. to find a solution on site so that
  239. it's applicable all over the world
  240. and all over the locations.
  241. currently we in a quite lucky situation
  242. in Europe because we do have
  243. geological formations in the northern
  244. seaside so like Norway off Norway UK
  245. and so on where we have huge
  246. reservoir which we can use to store the
  247. CO2 there. Yeah.
  248. >> But for continental Europe you have to
  249. find different solutions. either you
  250. invest in infrastructure to get the CO2
  251. there offshore or you find local
  252. solutions and yeah that's I think it's
  253. one part the oil and gas business is
  254. focusing on currently and will continue
  255. focus on
  256. >> in Austria it was banned right until
  257. last year to store
  258. >> is it open now I'm not quite sure since
  259. I left the business yes it was banned
  260. to
  261. uncertainty and the corrosional effects
  262. on the war bell on the pipes
  263. and so on. Yeah. bore hole. yeah,
  264. >> I think they have relaxed something but
  265. I'm not sure like to what extent
  266. >> you have to find also the right
  267. geological deposit for usage and so on.
  268. So I don't know. Yeah.
  269. >> Yeah. just parenthesis because the
  270. three of us went to China recently in
  271. different trips but still and we
  272. had a class in Warner University where
  273. they said that they are exploring
  274. like synthetic fuels for airplanes
  275. >> and they are putting the or or setting
  276. the factory to produce it next to
  277. a coal fire plant or something
  278. >> because they can capture the carbon and
  279. they can utilize it just on site to
  280. create synthetic fuels
  281. >> and interesting thing they are following
  282. the European goals to make their
  283. aerospace u clean so they are working
  284. hard in synthetic fields that's
  285. interesting that they are setting the
  286. the producing plants next to the
  287. >> where is produced which makes sense
  288. OM is doing a similar stuff. that's
  289. for sure one other solution to use this
  290. in order to have a isolated system I
  291. would say where you can use reuse
  292. in a circular way your your emissions
  293. >> and make something positive out of it.
  294. yeah and China is currently what I
  295. have learned on my China trip is very
  296. open for new markets and Europe is
  297. actually the only stable market they are
  298. aiming for in at the moment since US is
  299. not a possibility for them currently.
  300. >> Yeah.
  301. >> So they invest a lot also on the
  302. renewable side to make the standards
  303. comparable or equally to the European
  304. system. So also with certificates,
  305. ESG documentations whatever so that
  306. they are really competable and have
  307. the possibility to enter the market.
  308. >> That's what I plan to do.
  309. >> Yeah. Cool. I have one more question
  310. going back and then we are only
  311. going to look forward is back let's say
  312. 20 years ago or something what was the
  313. apprehension or or what were the
  314. oil and gas people thinking about
  315. renewables 20 years ago
  316. >> 20 years ago yeah 20 years ago in
  317. let me have a look 20 years ago there
  318. was
  319. it was something green something
  320. which you would not seriously consider
  321. 20 years ago. I think 15 years ago
  322. >>.
  323. >> around there was or 10 years ago
  324. there was already a kind of a peak or
  325. some some kind of growth seeing on the
  326. renewable markets
  327. >> there. I think a lot of oil and gas
  328. companies also BP and some they Shell
  329. they had a look into the renewable
  330. site but they invested they did
  331. research they created project but
  332. the renewable side never made the big
  333. how do you say never made the race
  334. >> since oil and gas projects the
  335. companies are more focusing on project
  336. economics and oil and gas projects never
  337. have the same kind of economics than the
  338. the renewable side. I think and I think
  339. this is one of the reasons why
  340. yeah there's still a battle between the
  341. renewable and the oil and gas
  342. projects
  343. >> because of this project economics
  344. approach and out of my experience I can
  345. say this is for sure one of the
  346. biggest hurdle hurdles to manage for
  347. within an oil and gas company for the
  348. renewables projects because you always
  349. have to you always you're ranked on
  350. your portfol in your portfolio
  351. approach, you always have to beat
  352. against the oil and gas projects
  353. and it's hard to manage.
  354. >> Yeah. And making memory 20 years ago,
  355. maybe it was early 2000s the boom in
  356. Spain because they started with solar.
  357. then in 2010 it was higher because I
  358. I met at Arasmos in these periods in
  359. Spain and it was just like
  360. starting to be a boom but it was in the
  361. ivaric site more solar
  362. >> and then they had the sand tax and then
  363. all the story after. But it was like a
  364. 20 years ago starting I think like
  365. >> being viable economically
  366. >> eight
  367. >> nine 10 I think it's more it's more
  368. >> economically viable yes maybe but not
  369. really competable with oil and gas.
  370. Yeah. No, it's
  371. >> Yeah, but I think what was
  372. underestimated from the oil and gas side
  373. which is currently the case is really
  374. the speed of
  375. cost deflation because now with
  376. batteries the PV panels
  377. wind whatever so it's really cost
  378. is going down and now we're getting more
  379. into a more in a range where we can more
  380. compete I think that was underestimated
  381. and I think also the
  382. pressure from the society was actually
  383. underestimated. now currently we
  384. have a little bit of a backlash but I
  385. think in the last couple of years also
  386. the society was enforcing more
  387. openness for doing something for the
  388. climate.
  389. >> I think this was also underestimated or
  390. still maybe is a little bit on the
  391. oil and gas side.
  392. >> Yeah. And going into that topic of the
  393. how people perceive the renewables,
  394. is there a project from Bin energy on a
  395. how do you call it the landfield?
  396. >>.
  397. >> Right. So how was that experience with
  398. the local community and if if is that
  399. idea replicable in other countries?
  400. >> Yeah. Yeah. I think it's a it's a very
  401. very useful blueprint I would say.
  402. Yes, V min has it. It's the shlloka
  403. because this is used
  404. land. It's a brownfield position.
  405. It's not green field. It's already used.
  406. and yeah, you use it for something
  407. positive now. And I think as long as you
  408. are technically flexible to accept that
  409. the terrain is not straight and so on.
  410. and if there are also clear
  411. regulations since like a re reuse
  412. of this kind of sites has a
  413. quick approval time. I think that's
  414. something you could roll out all over
  415. CE especially when it comes to I don't
  416. know old mining areas we and so on
  417. and we also have in planned another
  418. project in Austria
  419. which is also in an industrial area
  420. where the land is used for something
  421. else at the currently the population
  422. around is used that there's some
  423. industrial things ongoing and they
  424. perceive the reusage of this
  425. already used area for a positive climate
  426. project as very positive.
  427. >> Okay.
  428. >> So I think it's it's the it's one option
  429. to have a accelerate decarbonization.
  430. Yeah.
  431. >> Good to know.
  432. >> Yeah. And just talking about the urban
  433. area, geothermal is getting to be more
  434. and more prominent proposition for all
  435. the urban areas. It's I saw also in
  436. Amsterdam they have been evaluating it.
  437. in Vienna there's already one
  438. of the big one
  439. >> being done. What do you think that
  440. in other what are the systemic risk
  441. because in urban area there's so many
  442. people and then are there any risk
  443. affiliated with geothermal project being
  444. in the urban areas
  445. >> it all depends on the ge geology I
  446. would say
  447. in Vienna we have a very we have a very
  448. special situation a very positive
  449. situation we are not on a high-risk
  450. tectonic system.
  451. >> we do have a lot of sample
  452. application and we have it's the Vienna
  453. basin.
  454. >> We have experiences from the oil and gas
  455. site because OM was drilling there I
  456. don't know 4 and a half thousand wells
  457. into this ground. So there's a very
  458. good understanding how the world
  459. underneath theology is looking like. So
  460. that's one thing which makes it very
  461. attractive to go there. Now since we do
  462. have a d-risisk model since we have
  463. so much information to go there from the
  464. geological point and the second thing is
  465. why Vienna has has a very very good
  466. preconditions is we do have this
  467. district heating network one of the
  468. biggest actually in Europe
  469. >> which you have to use or can use
  470. immediately. So two components are going
  471. together. The one is this very good
  472. geology.
  473. >> Yeah.
  474. >> On the other side this digital heating
  475. network.
  476. >> So coming back to the to thinking of
  477. is it anywhere else also possible.
  478. >> Yeah.
  479. >> You have to check. Yeah. yeah I do
  480. know that within Austria other basins
  481. were analyzed where the risk is higher.
  482. >>.
  483. >> and canceled again. When it comes to
  484. Europe it's the same. You also you
  485. always have to think do we have this
  486. distributing network heat
  487. distributing network and do we have the
  488. geology right yeah Buddhaest for
  489. example
  490. >> would have a would be in a very
  491. beneficial situation due to the
  492. geothermal
  493. grading because it's it's a higher
  494. >> it's a the geology there provides
  495. higher temperatures so we could use it
  496. for really very easy
  497. easy to get high temperature water
  498. out of it. But there we do know that the
  499. seismicity so the seismic risk is
  500. high. So you can you could do it with
  501. monitoring AI approaches more
  502. maintenance but it's more risk attached
  503. to it. So you always have to check you
  504. know the geology and you also always
  505. have to check if there is a distributed
  506. network.

  508. geothermal
  509. >> outside of Vienna
  510. >> or in Vienna or somewhere.
  511. >> No it's done. It's done.
  512. >> Yeah. Okay.
  513. >> The geothermal it's done with in
  514. combination with OM.
  515. >> Yeah.

  517. >> Last one year ago they you started to
  518. drill. One year ago, we started to drill
  519. and it was on the 22nd of August. We
  520. finalized the first test very
  521. successfully and we can we have proven
  522. that the water has the right
  523. temperature. We have the right amount of
  524. volume of hot water and we can
  525. continue with our strategy. Yeah. Yeah.
  526. It's the company is called deep joint
  527. venture oil and gas with the utility.
  528. >> Yeah. I just want to go a bit
  529. deeper with geothermal
  530. because I find it so elegant and
  531. clean and sophisticated. And in Chile we
  532. have a lot of potential because of the
  533. volcano but we also are cysmic
  534. country. So I want to make the
  535. difference also for the community
  536. the difference of geothermal to
  537. generate electricity to use it as a
  538. direct heat.

  540. >> So to generate electricity you need
  541. deeper holes right just to
  542. >> oh deeper holes that's you need higher
  543. temperatures.
  544. >> Let's call it like this. The
  545. temperature makes a difference. Okay.
  546. >> and this is connected to the
  547. geothermal gradient.
  548. meaning how how many degrees increase
  549. of the degrees temperature increase do
  550. we have by 100 m going down the earth
  551. >> and this is different from the
  552. tectonic situation
  553. >> we in on a global scale so in
  554. continental Europe where we are now with
  555. in Indiana for example there is an
  556. increase of the temperature 3°
  557. degrees per 100 m. That's the gradient.

  559. >> Chile has volcanoes, volcanic
  560. activities, which means you're very
  561. close to the really hot stuff. So that
  562. you I don't know.
  563. >> It shouldn't be so deep.
  564. >> Exactly. I don't know the increase

  715. so the grid is kind of new

  721. Europe with the all infrastructure? They
  722. could be they should be replaced soon
  723. and make a plan or it should be more
  724. optimized and more going into
  725. digitalization and software. What is
  726. your vision?
  727. >> No. Yeah. I think that the best
  728. approach would be to push digital
  729. digitalization first and then
  730. optimize old infrastructure or the
  731. old assets. So first go for
  732. digitalization connect the assets
  733. make a bit a better flexibility in
  734. your connections and then you go for
  735. if you're new infrastructure or renew
  736. the old one. I think that's but you
  737. have to invest in both of course. Yeah,
  738. >> because you can kick the ball as much as
  739. you want, but at the end you have to
  740. update the grid or change.
  741. >> Absolutely. But first you have to
  742. connect and get the information out and
  743. then then you have you can be very much
  744. more precise where it's urgently needed
  745. to renew first and so you can
  746. prioritize.

  748. >> And what is the strategy for Vin Energy?
  749. And we heard about a new ac
  750. acquisition as well for wind asset.
  751. so overall strategy for the assets at
  752. Vin Energy and what was the new

  756. providing energy for the city of Vienna.

  759. decarbonized in 2014.

  761. consumption,
  762. electricity, heat has to come of 100%
  763. decarbonized renewable assets.

  768. know we need 17 terowatt
  769. I think hours in 2014 for the entire
  770. consumption which cannot be done by the
  771. way from within Vienna city alone. So
  772. it has to incorporate all kinds of so
  773. anti- Austria all countries of Austria
  774. but also surrounding countries
  775. so international countries so that we
  776. really can fulfill our needs and provide
  777. energy.
  778. So to get there you need producing
  779. asset you need a pipeline you need
  780. properties.
  781. >>. And this is a lot of work.

  783. >> And Invinc which was the acquisition
  784. has already a big pipeline has
  785. producing assets. so we need it they
  786. have it. So it was a perfect match
  787. to reach the goals and with this
  788. we will reach the goal. we will
  789. reach the goal on the on the electricity
  790. side. So 2.8 8 gawatt in 2040
  791. coming purely out of this of this
  792. deal and we also will reach it with
  793. the geothermal application with heat
  794. power and of course
  795. when we are in time with maturing our
  796. hydro hydrogen
  797. goals then we will be completely re
  798. re net zero net free climate neutral
  799. in 2014.

  804. regarding the gas dependency with the
  805. Russian situation now, the gas getting
  806. into Europe, but also you mentioned the
  807. hydrogen strategy. So what is your
  808. vision with the implementation of
  809. hydrogen in Europe? If
  810. you should use the existent pipelines
  811. and modernize or just start from the
  812. scratch and to build a new hydrogen
  813. network.

  815. old pipelines are not the issue.
  816. You can you could you can use them if
  817. you upgrade them a little bit for the
  818. hydrogen trans transports. The issue
  819. there is more the joints the compressors
  820. so where which are not hydrogen
  821. ready. I would say creating a new
  822. infrastructure I think it's not the
  823. goal. It's more or let's face it phrase
  824. it differently what we should use or
  825. reuse are these corridors. So
  826. the areas where already existing
  827. pipelines are
  828. >> we should use some of them we
  829. have to refurbish other and other areas
  830. we have to we can create something new
  831. but go for the existing corridors I
  832. think that's the main message why
  833. it's permitted there they are
  834. already done and yeah it's industry
  835. and people and we know the corers
  836. then already. I think that's the
  837. strategy to go.

  839. difficult to manage because it's too

  967. there. In some countries you don't even
  968. have this kind of registration. So
  969. you have to find out first who is the
  970. owner. So it's it's different from
  971. country to country. yeah
  972. >> and especially depending also being
  973. within the EU being outside of EU.
  974. >> Yeah. we are now in 19th of November
  975. and we heard also news in this week that
  976. European Union changed a bit the
  977. strategy to the like the grid connection
  978. queue. at the end they're going to
  979. prioritize some if it has base or not
  980. if it's environmental friendly or not.
  981. How do you see this direction? Yeah,
  982. very very good because it gives an
  983. equal chance to
  984. >> to everybody to the utilities and
  985. everybody developers because you have
  986. clear how do you say clear directions
  987. what you have to apply that you are
  988. getting prioritized.
  989. >>. In contrary, this is in contrary to
  990. the past. The past was more first come
  991. first serves. Here we do have now a
  992. clear a clear how to say standard what
  993. have to be done. and best for me it's
  994. anyway the way to go and it's also
  995. the way to go for wind energy because it
  996. helps to stabilize the grid. It also
  997. takes a little bit of pressure out of
  998. the grit
  999. exchange or growth or development.

  1071. that Van Energy is going to be reaching

  1073. the acquisition that you had about the
  1074. electricity but Vienna as a whole you

  1113. nuclear power plant which was never
  1114. taken into

  1116. run.
  1117. >> Exactly. It was never run because we
  1118. don't were demonstrating. So I'm part of
  1119. this kind of generation. So it's in my
  1120. DNA inherited that we are not supporting
  1121. it. But overall small modular nuclear
  1122. power plants which are already in
  1123. construction. of course it's a very
  1124. clever idea. It's a kind is clean. it's
  1125. it does not have any emissions.

  1127. kind of other energy forms established
  1128. in the next 30 years for sure nuclear
