  36. Alexandra. I'm in charge of the
  37. Tacmen's global market. It's great honor
  38. to be here finally. and I met
  39. Daniel and Rahul since two years ago.
  40. two years ago in our class in TEN
  41. renewable masters and when I'm in
  42. Europe I live in Vienna and I
  43. actually I'm very exciting to be here
  44. because I like I witness how you convert
  45. this from a idea and to reality
  46. and this is also what's the start of
  47. tackle man
  48. finally like translate to this right

  50. yeah because actually the
  51. parent company is Colomo and it was
  52. founded more than like 32 years ago
  53. and starting as a switch gear and
  54. energy solution company and it was
  55. a special time for infrastructure
  56. development and that's how we catch the
  57. wind and in 2017
  58. the idea is about energy transition
  59. and u many of renewable renewable energy
  60. like solar and wind has already been
  61. deployed and people are quite fresh
  62. about the idea of energy storage
  63. but we come out of utility
  64. background so that we know energy is
  65. not just generation it's a system
  66. where you have generation you have
  67. transmission you have distribution
  68. it's just like I think of it like a
  69. digestive system right so you got to
  70. eat you create energy
  71. but if you eat too much and you
  72. have a right not so good digestive.
  73. Yeah. And you it just got a waste. It
  74. just got a waste just like the abandoned
  75. solar electricity generator or wind
  76. electricity generated. So that's how
  77. I understand the system of battery
  78. because we saw the like very steep
  79. growth of renewable stores especially
  80. in Europe and we know that there got
  81. to be some time you need to digest
  82. previously it's hunger and hunger hunger
  83. but now it's like too much how to take a
  84. digestive fuel
  85. as a energy storage. So we have this
  86. idea and we found the company in 2017
  87. and actually the next year 2018 is
  88. the first year that we come to in solar.
  89. It's also my first year into solar.
  90. Okay.
  91. And back then I wasn't in B1 Hall. We
  92. call it like a num numa ice like number
  93. one hall.
  94. Yeah.
  95. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But at that time
  96. it's it's like a very fresh thing for us
  97. because many of the participants
  98. come out from a solar background
  99. actually
  100. and they've been here like more than 10
  101. years.
  102. Exactly.
  103. It's a very very old show, historical
  104. show.
  105. Yeah, it is.
  106. Yeah. And we saw that I think
  107. back in 2017 it's about also ABC but
  108. you have like three halls or two
  109. halls like two rows but now it's four.
  110. So
  111. Alexander we want to know a bit more
  112. about tech but first just a bit about
  113. your journey. So what did you study
  114. before before getting into energy and
  115. how was your transition into energy?
  116. Okay. So my background is actually in
  117. computer engineering. I was studying
  118. in University of Toronto.
  119. and actually I entered as a
  120. mechanical engineering.
  121. Oh wow.
  122. But I think one I am one of those spario
  123. kids. we have no idea what is
  124. mechanical engineering. When I choose
  125. the major I thought Iron Man,
  126. right? I like that's the only channel
  127. that I know. And when I enter and you
  128. have to study like a structural
  129. analysis, you have to study like matrix
  130. like a linear algebra all this kind of
  131. stuff. It's fun but I have no clue what
  132. kind of role it can lead me to. So on
  133. the second year I transit into
  134. computer engineering because
  135. like at that time it's what cool kids do
  136. comesai. So I transit into computer
  137. engineering and it's quite exciting
  138. journey for me because we learn a lot of
  139. interesting stuff like parallel
  140. programming FPGA
  141. like none of those I have related
  142. now to
  143. so actually when I graduated we were
  144. doing this apnea analysis so using
  145. machine learning just do automatic
  146. dynamosis
  147. of stop breathing while sleeping.
  148. So it's a it's a very it's a very fun
  149. projects to do but still it's like
  150. you're in the ivory tower
  151. because you're in a pre- setup
  152. experiment environment
  153. like you're comfy and there are written
  154. roads for you but
  155. yeah it's in Canada and as you can
  156. imagine like you can see what's your
  157. life is after like 14 14 years. So
  158. for me I would like to know a little
  159. bit more about what's going on around
  160. the world. and renewable is one
  161. of my interests. I actually the
  162. first time I have any contact with
  163. this industry is back in 2013 when we
  164. were doing a project and it's
  165. like one of the small capstone mock
  166. capstone that we do in school and I
  167. was working with BF rock power they were
  168. doing developments sustainable
  169. developments in Canada and they do
  170. like wind they do solar
  171. and I like we were in charge of the
  172. marketing part but they are all very
  173. smallsized
  174. and that the reason is like Canadian
  175. markets they are born renewable because
  176. 80% of the energy generation comes from
  177. hydro and the like the left 20 % is
  178. for nuclear
  179. and nuclear but they don't have a
  180. they have they have also they have like
  181. a biomass but those are the major
  182. like the major rough 80 8020 and
  183. that's it.
  184. Okay. So you can really see any you
  185. know big opportunities there but they do
  186. have like a global adjustment back in
  187. 2013 which I haven't even graduated
  188. yet but that gave me a rough idea about
  189. climate change and
  190. renewable and after graduation so
  191. instead of go going into master study
  192. or like go to research center because
  193. previously with the experiment we do
  194. like research and I find quite
  195. confined. So I come to Tacoma because
  196. they just found it and it's fresh and
  197. they need people who speak English. So I
  198. think I'm the one and I come to learn
  199. and it's a it's a fresh subject for
  200. me
  201. and I like back then when I travel
  202. to Germany I come to in solar I also
  203. come to like handover industrial show.
  204. And I find everything is so fresh.
  205. Nothing is written on text.
  206. It's very dynamic.
  207. So you see and then you touch it and you
  208. talk with people. But very funny
  209. because back then as I
  210. said energy storage is very fresh. So
  211. when I was introducing about energy
  212. storage you tell them the story. Okay.
  213. you got to you got to store the
  214. electricity and you got to release
  215. it. I said why why you going to release
  216. it then? mostly the motive is
  217. subsidition
  218. because of
  219. because I can because it's free right
  220. and the second part is I want to
  221. use the green energy
  222. like my solar panel generated and now
  223. I want to use it. So those are the major
  224. sub subjective and the second reason is
  225. actually for spoiled and
  226. a very privileged just society to say it
  227. because not everywhere they can have
  228. subsidy and they can say that I have
  229. this value of sustainability and I pay
  230. for it right so I that's why I learned
  231. that actually
  232. European market is a very privileged
  233. market or I say it's like more civilized
  234. market and that's why it becomes the
  235. leader who actually cultivates the
  236. industry.

  239. you look into the global market for

  241. Which markets are interesting for you?
  242. we are in Europe, we intera for

  244. of the country and regions are more

  260. explain why global market because
  261. you see like there was for the
  262. last I think 80 years
  263. there was like a modernization
  264. of society
  265. and the key role or key feature of
  266. modern society is the infrastructure.
  267. It's a brand new infrastructure you can
  268. use electricity.
  269. And
  270. and now
  271. we see the same thing is going on like
  272. because back then for this
  273. industrial revolution like it's all over
  274. the globe, right? It's a now or later.
  275. So I see exactly the same thing
  276. happening for all over the globe now
  277. or later. It's just like a different
  278. demand. So as I just mentioned
  279. European is more like a privileged
  280. society or like a large community or
  281. union but as you mentioned for four
  282. countries the first Germany of course
  283. it's a it's a leaders and one
  284. motive for Germany market is that
  285. it's it's a leader and it's a number
  286. one who lead this transition and for
  287. us it's like I an icon to be present in
  288. this market. So we set up our company
  289. here. We actually have office and
  290. warehouse and training center here in
  291. Germany because we think it's very
  292. important to collaborate with
  293. local network here
  294. who actually have been in this
  295. industry since the very beginning.
  296. Yeah. So
  297. yeah all mo all most of the jeans you
  298. know come from here and then they be
  299. heritaged herit yeah
  300. and then elaborate a little bit
  301. out so we actually our first market is
  302. bannon and we're still very interested
  303. in that
  304. okay
  305. because this market is very active
  306. and Netherland is very famous
  307. for innovation and creating something
  308. new. You live there, .
  309. Yes. So we would like to be active there
  310. and we have our wonderful partner
  311. positron who introduced us there and who
  312. successfully built the name together
  313. and we really appreciate that because
  314. they help us to step take
  315. this first step
  316. and strongly and we would like to
  317. continue this partnership and for
  318. other markets very exciting market
  319. definitely is Eastern Europe.

  321. Including like Hungary like u
  322. Bulgaria, Romania,
  323. Czech Republic, Poland and all of
  324. them.
  325. Yeah. And we're already taking actions.
  326. We're doing the great integrated
  327. certifications. We work with our
  328. local partners. we actually also have
  329. a planning to set up factory because
  330. the idea is local to local
  331. where can we say or is still
  332. right now under discussion is Romania.

  335. I think one of the reason is
  336. actually a lot of technicians are from
  337. Romania even like in Germany. So
  338. they know the market very well and
  339. they just joined the European Union like
  340. the Shenen region and I think that's
  341. great sign that the
  342. Romania society or like industry is
  343. having a conversion or economic
  344. environment is having a transition a
  345. good one.
  346. Yeah. and we would like to get on
  347. this together with our friends. Yeah.
  348. Amazing. What you mentioned about
  349. partnerships, we have seen it in many
  350. interviews, collaboration and you are
  351. applying it between companies. So
  352. that's amazing to
  353. increase your market and being more
  354. robot. for this.
  355. Yeah. I think not not only the market,
  356. it's more about it's it's more
  357. about we have the friends in the
  358. industry who have firsthand information.
  359. So because like it's a
  360. survival game although it's like a you
  361. know privileged market. It's a
  362. survival game and you want to know which
  363. direction is the right direction. So
  364. it's like a hunting right? Do you want
  365. the best information and you want
  366. like a team a squad
  367. like to nail to nail. So for us
  368. it's it's very nice to have our
  369. partner our friends not necessarily a
  370. company but we're very open to
  371. collaborate share insights so
  372. you are going to be the for
  373. last three days we have seen many
  374. different kind of people being your
  375. collaborators like especially we saw
  376. from the distribution side a lot a lot
  377. of people from the EPC side as well.
  378. Yeah, EPC sides a very important role
  379. because our focus is in industrial
  380. energy storage and in industrial
  381. there's so many different industries
  382. different industry means different
  383. solutions.
  384. Exactly.
  385. So not only EPC like there are different
  386. EPCs and there are different player and
  387. from upstream to downstream were
  388. already all interested. Okay.
  389. Yeah. because know at the very
  390. beginning we were doing residential it's
  391. a standard product it's a standard one
  392. but the thing is you have to know
  393. it's a supply chain and I am part of the
  394. supply chain or even like above supply
  395. chain we say value chain what value are
  396. you creating for this ecosystem
  397. and we want to hear what people are
  398. talking about this because previously
  399. when we pitch we just pitch about our
  400. product later they Now we figure out
  401. it's not about the product, it's about
  402. what the final customer wants.
  403. Okay.
  404. Right. And the final customer wants is
  405. sometime it's a very abstract thing.
  406. It's like a energy service, right? And
  407. how do you define that? How how do you
  408. supply that? So every value chain or
  409. every supplier in the value chain
  410. they are going to define their
  411. interface.
  412. Yeah.
  413. And how they communicate. And the
  414. question we ask every day within our
  415. team is what can we do more about our
  416. products? What can we do more about how
  417. to support you in the presence and in
  418. services? So we actually work with a
  419. lot of different partners like
  420. very like out of your imagination
  421. like Bitcoin.
  422. So they also come to us.
  423. Yeah. And previously we were
  424. approached like three years ago
  425. but now they are more motivated
  426. because of our scale up so the
  427. price goes down and they have more drive
  428. to come to approach us and talk about of
  429. overall solution and end customer is
  430. again it's different. So for us it's
  431. quite interesting
  432. they talk about all different kind of
  433. scenarios.
  434. So as you we ask like what kind of
  435. partners. So
  436. actually a lot even our competitor can
  437. be our partner sometimes.
  438. It was very interesting for me
  439. talking to yesterday and they said
  440. one of the early project that they did
  441. in Ben market was a lot of farmers at
  442. a farmer area where they had PB and you
  443. never expect them to be early adopters.
  444. But how do you see that like them being
  445. the early adopters? subsidy as I said
  446. subsidy
  447. because it's free why not
  448. right and but of course another another
  449. drive is actually the installers
  450. because including
  451. the PV parts is decreasing or it
  452. becomes more competitive so they also
  453. want to generate another stream like
  454. a cash flow like generation line so
  455. they're considering what to have right
  456. so if I'm placing myself in their
  457. shoe. Maybe after like after
  458. energy stories may they may install
  459. chargers and we have this this
  460. concept was discussed like six
  461. years ago
  462. because we saw that every of one of them
  463. have tractor by themsel.
  464. And I was in the Bowman show I think
  465. one month ago.
  466. Yeah. And I saw a full set of
  467. Caterpillar tractors including
  468. charging solutions all electrified.
  469. Yeah.
  470. So think of that
  471. tractors. Wow.
  472. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. So anyways they got
  473. to apply loans to for
  474. apply loans to buy the tractors. Why not
  475. electric? They got to be more. So
  476. I think subsidy plays a very important
  477. role to open the opportunity.
  478. Yeah, I don't know if they are kicking
  479. us out or with this announcement.
  480. Maybe we can we can continue
  481. regardless. Everyone understands we are
  482. at interolar a lot of noises but it's
  483. very interesting what you're saying.
  484. We also want to understand
  485. what is going on in the market right
  486. now? what kind of solution are selling
  487. more and people are inquiring because in
  488. at interolar there are a lot of inquiry
  489. going on at wel
  490. I think the most inquiries happens
  491. when people have pave already
  492. and now they think okay
  493. big plants in big scale
  494. yeah bigger scale big scale because
  495. smaller scales they will go to like our
  496. partner positron
  497. okay
  498. yeah so big scales because they are
  499. developed not by the final owner not
  500. by the individual owner they're
  501. developed by the development
  502. companies with their own investors so
  503. they have a promise of a return
  504. right and when there's too many PV on
  505. there
  506. fitted carriage goes down same happen
  507. with wind okay
  508. and the expected return goes down or
  509. even negative
  510. negative yeah
  511. and what what actions they can Okay. Is
  512. they add battery,
  513. they figure out another kind of business
  514. model, they add it on there and they
  515. make it positive and they have to take
  516. this kind of actions and it's a
  517. profitable action because having like
  518. collocation make the project more
  519. resilient.
  520. just you mentioned before that
  521. renewable energy is one of your
  522. interests.
  523. So what are your other other interest?
  524. I have so many so many interest. I have
  525. so many interests. So others
  526. Oh okay. I like AI concepts
  527. and also applications.
  528. I like spiritual things.
  529. Okay. Such such as
  530. like
  531. such as I don't know how to name those.
  532. Okay. Well, we can have a separate like
  533. with our beer maybe like I'll get
  534. prepared and I'll share but it's
  535. it's also very very interesting. It's
  536. like
  537. at this time like before we go into the
  538. other interest one more question.
  539. Yeah. Yeah. I jump

  541. for example when we were talking
  542. about the inquiries and it was mostly
  543. with the PB scale PV and they were
  544. inquiring about the storage. You see
  545. especially from the wind farm and
  546. when the off onshore or offshore wind
  547. farm they just go for the electrolyers
  548. and offshore yeah offshore is difficult
  549. they want to create hydrogen but
  550. technology is going together hand in
  551. hand like storage hydrogen and what I
  552. want to ask here is that
  553. it's floating away
  554. yeah it's flowing away but it's it's
  555. very interesting it will for someone who
  556. is manufacturer How do they see
  557. because we were also talking with
  558. Johnny and about new technology and
  559. new products coming in where
  560. okay I know where we're going.
  561. so I think new products means first
  562. of all new solutions but it has to
  563. reside somewhere as I said it's a it's a
  564. digestive system or it's like a whole
  565. system including absorbing
  566. and
  567. Right. So you have a whole system. So
  568. any technology will lay into the system
  569. and or like software solution make it
  570. more effective
  571. or with a better prediction and then
  572. you got to come back because the
  573. structure doesn't really change that
  574. much.
  575. And what comes back to the
  576. technology I think
  577. one thing about one because you see
  578. like the systematic view is from
  579. from me and from many people who has
  580. power industry backgrounds
  581. but from from renewable industry it's
  582. it's a little bit different I think
  583. because there was a background of
  584. climate change and the net zero
  585. and that is a new narrative was
  586. created 30 or 40 years ago
  587. and this somehow create some demand.
  588. Yeah. like aligning some forces, right?
  589. Because before it was like global
  590. warming, then it was forced
  591. investment or capital to enter to invest
  592. and that is a brilliant brilliant
  593. act. Yeah. So now when it goes further
  594. down, I think it's no longer just about
  595. the narrative, it's about strong and
  596. real demand. because what they
  597. create is that they use the narrative
  598. they set up the absorption part
  599. right and they create those
  600. generation or like hydrogen they can be
  601. also generation
  602. and then like that push another demand
  603. for digestion. So now you will see a
  604. cycle one pushes the other.
  605. But back to the energy storage
  606. technology. We were also talking about
  607. sodium. We were also talking about like
  608. long duration.
  609. But you have to come back to a very
  610. re real perspective is cost
  611. because I think living in force is
  612. already quite magical. If you see the
  613. the if you see the history of how this
  614. technology come
  615. grow
  616. with the price is very high and
  617. yeah it's amazing because
  618. you did it about I think the 1960 or
  619. something and the major drive is
  620. to get rid of oil like not get rid of at
  621. least it's alternative
  622. and actually mobile is the one
  623. so oil and gas. Yes. Yes. It's the one
  624. who drive the research side of leading
  625. battery from the very beginning but they
  626. give up. They give up. They just here's
  627. the money. Do it. No results. Okay,

  629. So this is what they do. Many of the
  630. venture capital also do that. but
  631. so they actually create a very
  632. difficult situation because you
  633. know like the very noble scholar
  634. Dr. good enough.
  635. Who who who was one of the top
  636. researcher of lithium battery and he
  637. contribute a lot into this area. he
  638. doesn't benefit like financially
  639. from their own invention
  640. and they also have co-authors they
  641. give the patents to the English
  642. academy and they sell it to I think
  643. Panasonic or another Japanese company
  644. and then they have that patent but later
  645. there's another I think a scholar who
  646. was publishing something else or
  647. Panason I don't remember but basically
  648. several ones have the same patents and
  649. it's somehow got open open
  650. sourced.
  651. So that's how everybody got their
  652. patents and start to make battery and
  653. it's no longer about the academic
  654. invention itself. So it's not only about
  655. technology. What it's more important is
  656. manufacturing process. How do you have
  657. the best process to make this happen on
  658. a large scale
  659. defines what become the mainstream and
  660. that is what happened now and so that's
  661. how we got cheap and affordable
  662. technology.

  667. processing the story behind like with
  668. the patterns and everything. Yeah, I'll

  675. they create the small ones. What about

  682. Alexander to you is
  683. Techlan is trying to enter many
  684. different market at the same time
  685. and how do you see the changes in the
  686. market the regulation how are they
  687. enabling regulation or are they
  688. distracting or constraint?
  689. Well it's a it's a complex topic and
  690. there are so many markets.
  691. Yeah.
  692. Yeah. Some markets still are still
  693. learning because still energy storage
  694. is fresh to them.
  695. And well we saw that
  696. famous for compliance European Union is
  697. it's tighten it's that's what we saw and
  698. I think it's it's it's it's
  699. double-edged so good and bad
  700. the good perspective is it
  701. becomes more standard
  702. and make the competition more fair
  703. make the entrance barrier higher
  704. and that that is definitely a good thing
  705. especially for consumers,
  706. right? Pro consumers. But on the bad
  707. sides, I think it's about the
  708. adoption.
  709. But I don't blame because
  710. European markets did the first
  711. adoption.
  712. It's always a early adopter. So I think
  713. they contribute too much to the
  714. industry. they can retrieve and give
  715. others more opportunity.
  716. No, it's wrong. It's wrong.
  717. Okay. And my closing question is
  718. about which which is the easier
  719. market. you already talk about
  720. the regulation part of it but in terms
  721. of also like for example you have
  722. a ch office in Chile too and it's a
  723. very advanced market in terms of TV.
  724. how do you see the difference that
  725. you're learning from different markets?
  726. I think it's to define easy
  727. market I would say easy market are ready

  730. supplier when we come to u mature market
  731. which is like a ready market
  732. it's easy for us it's very easy on the
  733. communication side on the education
  734. sides and easy to find partners because
  735. many partners are already self
  736. cultivated by by positive cash
  737. flow already. So that that is a easy
  738. market and difficult markets are
  739. actually markets who lacks fund.

  741. have to pay for it.

  747. when you said like someone had to pay
  748. for it. So how is that? we understood

  750. CEO of society that eastern market even
  751. if they are not able to pay
  752. just because they have
  753. they are able to pay
  754. compared to some other regions
  755. compared to some other regions that they
  756. they might have restraint but they
  757. are also trying to invest in energy
  758. storage more compared to some other
  759. countries because their grid are not
  760. able to take so what I'm trying to ask
  761. you is that how but the regulation is
  762. not supporting but people want it
  763. there's a need there's a bit of demand
  764. and supply gap over Yeah. So, how do you
  765. see market progressing in the next
  766. years?
  767. I think Eastern Europe will
  768. keep this momentum.
  769. Because not much has been realized.
  770. And you got to understand like in the in
  771. the previous 10 years,
  772. yeah,
  773. they're just watching,
  774. right? They're just
  775. they're just looking at a lot of
  776. things has been done already from
  777. Western Europe.
  778. Yeah. and they saw all those different
  779. applications being down
  780. and when it comes back to Eastern
  781. Europe it's just a beginning
  782. so I from what I think is there are
  783. large large opportunities
  784. residing in Eastern Europe and they
  785. are actually very aggressive because
  786. it takes 30 years for western
  787. countries to come here today.
  788. Yeah.
  789. And they're very cautious
  790. and they don't do many big scale
  791. energy storage projects
  792. but for Eastern Europe
  793. they the witness in the end you got to
  794. have the big ones
  795. so why don't we just have it now.

  797. the leaf frogging.

  799. for the western market that they do they
  800. are they can just leave some step and
  801. already move to energy storage
  802. because it's proven to be successful
  803. and you can also find mature partners
  804. from western Europe
  805. because many players are actually from

  807. they mas are acquiring tons of pipelines
  808. again in Romani and Bulgaria so
