  4. have been busy this all day. So we
  5. really appreciate this this opportunity
  6. to have you here. Here's Michael, the
  7. CEO of Solarity. Here we have the
  8. banner. would like to get to know you
  9. Michael a bit better. who you are,
  10. why Solarity, what you do and
  11. Solarity as a company. Please tell us a
  12. bit about yourself and also Okay. I'm
  13. Michael founder of Solarity.
  14. company started 14 years ago in Czech
  15. Republic after let's say turbulent era
  16. of PV and we started as a only
  17. international distributor in CE and
  18. gradually we de we developed into more
  19. international in the end more global
  20. distributor on four four continents and
  21. our scope is PV from A to Z
  22. everything what EPC our customer need
  23. And so we deliver mostly modules,
  24. inverter, mounting system also
  25. accessories, cables and lately we have
  26. started also with bigger BSS and
  27. collaboration with Tech. Okay. And
  28. you're based out of Prague check. Yes,
  29. we are based in Prague and we have
  30. different subsidiaries in Ukraine,
  31. in Middle East, Northern Africa and
  32. Latin America. Amazing for a company
  33. from Czech Republic. It's really global
  34. innocent. Hey, also tell us a bit
  35. more about the you mentioned the
  36. product that you're looking at..
  37. Tell us about the new product PV.
  38. You said there was the turbulent market
  39. and you had to pivot. Tell us a bit more
  40. about why people You mean the history or
  41. the history? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, we
  42. started before with installations as
  43. small EPC installing company in Czech
  44. and Slovakia. We did it for a couple of
  45. years but then the markets from both
  46. markets Czech and Slovak dropped from
  47. gigawatts to zero overnight. So we had
  48. also to switch to other markets and it
  49. was only possible to go international
  50. through distribution because it's very
  51. hard to expand like EPC to new country
  52. because of experience references
  53. language ATC. If you could tell us a bit
  54. more about the whole value chain. So
  55. there manufacturers then you come at a
  56. distributor and then there are EPCs.
  57. What are the difference who how do you
  58. collaborate with both of them?. And
  59. it's more about added value. Yeah. So
  60. how we as a distributors can help for
  61. the installing companies EPCs and there
  62. are many areas which manufacturers
  63. cannot cover. Yeah. The big company
  64. cannot have personnel in every country
  65. and in all the teams like technical
  66. support consulting local warehouses.
  67. This is something what manufacturers can
  68. can hardly manage. So that's why we
  69. we have distribution network and
  70. especially for small customers u
  71. manufacturers are not willing to talk
  72. with one inverter sales. Yeah. Exactly.
  73. So it's impossible. That's why we
  74. have distribution networks and
  75. distributors and depends on size and we
  76. can provide different value to different
  77. type of customer different size of the
  78. customer. So it's different if you have
  79. small small installer of one mano or
  80. five people and it's different if you
  81. have like 50 50 people company. Okay.
  82. And who are the typical size of EPC
  83. development that you look forward to?
  84. What are the size of PV plant project
  85. that we look into? Yeah, we say that we
  86. deliver from kilowatt to megawatt. Yeah.
  87. So we actually cover multiple sectors
  88. from residential to commercial
  89. industrial up to up to utility and
  90. so depends on countries some countries
  91. are more residential sometimes it's
  92. shifting like now or lately to
  93. commercial so we are covering all of
  94. these from kilowatts to me and also
  95. we were discussing just off camera about
  96. the regulation within the central and
  97. east of Europe and is how it is not
  98. uniform what are the challenges that
  99. you're facing currently with regular
  100. relating
  101. first it's not clear it's delayed
  102. it's also changing it's not working so I
  103. would describe this in what no no
  104. disclaim everything what is not working
  105. in what are they no I will give you one
  106. example from Czech Republic then when
  107. they announced one program in Q3 Q4 last
  108. year and only now the first projects are
  109. really accepted and approved yeah so it
  110. takes too long and also the different
  111. schemes they are they're not continuing
  112. doing there are pauses for example 6
  113. months there's nothing to be done and
  114. all the companies are waiting for a new
  115. subsidy scheme so in this time there are
  116. no contracts signed which is not good
  117. for EPC because they have no business
  118. they have no continuous business so it's
  119. actually killing the companies killing
  120. the profits making extra expenses and I
  121. would welcome some more stabilized legal
  122. framework and environment for example
  123. like what what we can see in Germany
  124. and how often you see that they the
  125. framework is changing that is also
  126. something troubling you, right? Often
  127. often. Yeah. So very very often programs
  128. are valid for just 3 months, 6 months
  129. and they change, they stop and then then
  130. you are waiting for new one which is
  131. different. People don't have experience
  132. with they need to learn it then
  133. something is not working. For example,
  134. some agency is not working or is not
  135. prepared also governments are not
  136. prepared. So this is this is issuing
  137. some troubles mostly for EPC and project
  138. developers. Amazing. And also Michael
  139. you have been in the market for PV
  140. for very long. Now there's increasing
  141. storage solutions coming into the
  142. market. How do you see incorporate
  143. incorporating that into your offerings
  144. and what have you done so far for the
  145. battery solution? Okay. Yeah, I think
  146. it's perfect complement. So we have
  147. customers who installed megawatts of
  148. power parks of PV in a in a past
  149. and now for example they trade or they
  150. switch to spot pricing and they see
  151. negative pricing during the day. So then
  152. here the battery usage is the is the
  153. perfect compliment. So most of our
  154. customers are coming from our like new
  155. potential customers for BSS are coming
  156. from our previous PV customers who
  157. installed mostly commercial and
  158. industrial installations. And how do you
  159. see it expanding between the central and
  160. eastern Europe market as well? You said
  161. a lot of the countries they don't have
  162. they have shitty grid if quote unquote I
  163. can say that and why it's needed more
  164. for those countries. Yeah. one thing
  165. and we see it many countries the gr grid
  166. is overloaded that's one thing a second
  167. thing that there's a lot of permits for
  168. new connections issued but they are
  169. actually not used and they are blocking
  170. connection of real projects and
  171. yeah the stability of the grid is
  172. a big issue so I think batteries are
  173. perfect complement and can help also
  174. with the stability of the grid with the
  175. price peaks especially during noon So
  176. there are different motivations on
  177. different markets across central eastern
  178. Europe but generally I see batteries as
  179. the next big move and we see also based
  180. on interest here at exhibition there's
  181. huge interests from yeah big big
  182. number of EPCs and developers and also
  183. just coming back to solarity as a
  184. solution provider what are the value
  185. added services that you provide maybe
  186. training maybe something else that you
  187. provide to your your customer Sure.
  188. Yeah. Like trading, technical support,
  189. all the logistics around is like basic
  190. stuff what more or less all man all of
  191. distributors can can provide and
  192. providing. What we add now more extra is
  193. complete package for BSS. So for
  194. those companies those EPCs which
  195. don't have experience with building
  196. bigger megawatt megawatt hours
  197. storage we can provide consulting
  198. partly design we can provide
  199. information connection with aggregators
  200. with the banks in multiple countries
  201. across the region if they if they need
  202. and if they are not experienced by
  203. themselves. So we compile we provide
  204. complete package the services for
  205. BSS and do you have any successful case
  206. study that you would like to mention?
  207. Yeah. Yeah. We can we can mention latest
  208. bigger projects with tech 10 megawatt
  209. hours to be completed soon in Hungary.
  210. Yes. And who are you doing it for?
  211. we are doing it together with our former
  212. customer or current customer from PV I
  213. mean who we have long history with. So
  214. that's the exactly good good example of
  215. PV customer now who wanted to enlarge he
  216. wanted battery. So he we teamed up
  217. together and we providing other
  218. consulting service and together with
  219. with manufacturers and also if you could
  220. just tell us to the community who
  221. doesn't know for something for when
  222. you're having a battery storage
  223. project how long it takes to from the
  224. starting from the distribution you
  225. providing them with the infrastructure
  226. to build it.. Yeah. Very much
  227. depends on status or stage of permits.
  228. Yeah. So from initial idea to have
  229. permits like zonal permit, building
  230. permit, connection permit ready can be
  231. easily one year plus or something like
  232. this and then u also like technical
  233. discussion design and specification
  234. where project can take 2 3 months and
  235. then you have roughly 3 to four months
  236. for production and then one month for
  237. commissioning. So altogether we are
  238. talking about roughly one and a half
  239. year from basic idea until
  240. completion. In the meanwhile do you
  241. store all the hardware stuff within your
  242. vicinity or it comes directly once all
  243. the permit has been taken? depends on
  244. the size of the project. We are
  245. distributing also small batteries which
  246. we have in our stock. So they are for
  247. immediate delivery available for
  248. immediate delivery. about the bigger
  249. projects like hundreds of kilowatt hours
  250. and megawatt hours are made to order and
  251. they are coming directly from factory.
  252. Amazing Daniel. Yeah. in the regulation
  253. wise are there now batteries
  254. mandatory in the energy projects or not
  255. not everywhere more in western Europe I
  256. would say but there are different
  257. programs and subsidies which are
  258. supporting or preferring batteries to be
  259. integrated in current PV power plants or
  260. together with new PV power plants. Okay,
  261. great. And how do you see the
  262. knowledge gap in central and eastern
  263. Europe to in order to accelerate energy
  264. transition because maybe the technology
  265. is going faster than regulation. Policy
  266. makers know about what is happening in
  267. the in the market. How do you see this
  268. knowledge gap? yes, sometimes they
  269. issue some program which is partly
  270. nonsense. sometimes they are too
  271. strict like unnecessary strict they are
  272. requiring additional testing which is
  273. increasing the total projects capex
  274. and they are not respecting for example
  275. some certification from other EU
  276. countries which is unfortunately and are
  277. they making their own or they are
  278. putting some extra layers or extra
  279. requirements which is not required by
  280. majority of our countries or they are
  281. not respecting the basic of the
  282. standard standard certification. Yes. So
  283. they're requiring extra testing for
  284. example and stuff like this. And have
  285. you seen some space of collaboration
  286. with academy for example in order to
  287. constraint this gap knowledge gap? Yeah,
  288. of course there are discussions between
  289. acade academy and ministries and how to
  290. make it faster easier but it's not
  291. always successful it's ongoing and I
  292. think we should be more decisive here
  293. and make it more easy and faster which
  294. is possible because we have good
  295. examples as well within EU I think is
  296. leading with reasonable approach in
  297. majority of cases also sometimes Germany
  298. is creating their own extra standards
  299. but depends on the time but
  300. generally I think there's a space for
  301. some unified legislation and approach in
  302. EU it would u yeah make all parties
  303. involved the life much more easier
  304. Michael one last question to you how
  305. do you see the future of energy
  306. within central and eastern Europe
  307. what's the way forward
  308. I think now what we can feel here as
  309. well and tal last year and this year is
  310. this transition to battery storage.
  311. Yeah, I think this is the after PV or
  312. SPV was a big wow 15 years ago. Now we
  313. can see it in batteries starting from
  314. small scale residential up to utility
  315. scale super large batteries. So I
  316. think this is the main main driver of C
  317. or energy sector globally but in C as
  318. well. How to follow up on that how fast
  319. is it growing? Very fast. I think
  320. expectations are super high. We see high
  321. number of projects like everybody's
  322. talking about it but not many companies
  323. they have actual experience and this is
  324. little tricky as it was tricky with PV.
  325. also not PV projects end up well and
  326. I think it's important to connect with
  327. experienced parties and providers and
  328. with quality manufacturers. Amazing.
