  3. professor from our program and it's a
  4. privilege to having you here Alex. If
  5. we can tell you Alex it's well he
  6. will tell us about his experience and
  7. personal motivation in energy field and
  8. we're going to explore a bit the CE
  9. region in energy transition and
  10. something about Austria. So yeah, now
  11. >> we have here with Rahul because last
  12. time we didn't introduce ourselves. So

  29. much and let me express my honor to be
  30. here to be invited to this session to
  31. talk with you about the energy energy
  32. field which is as you said already my my
  33. passion and yeah I'm I had the
  34. pleasure or have still the pleasure to
  35. to lecture at the technical university
  36. and I had you in the class
  37. >> and yeah now it's going on energy is
  38. going on and it's a very important
  39. topic.
  40. >> It's very important. So maybe we could
  41. start from the beginning like your
  42. personal motivation to get into this
  43. field and how do you see it back in the
  44. time?
  45. >> How was the young Alex when he decided
  46. this this journey?
  47. >> Oh young Alex is long time ago.
  48. >> No long time ago. yeah well I had
  49. an education in Austria technical
  50. education in mechanical engineering and
  51. with this yeah it paves the
  52. ground for my next steps. I did not
  53. stop learning at that time. I then
  54. added in technical education in civil
  55. construction
  56. >> okay
  57. >> and engineering as well. but I
  58. then had the chance to start in a
  59. consulting office.
  60. >> I was hired there after the
  61. school directly after school and I
  62. started there with design of HVAC
  63. systems and so on. And
  64. >> where was it?
  65. >> in Vienna. It was it was in Vienna
  66. already. a big Austrian
  67. vianese engineering company hired
  68. me and as I said I started with
  69. accounting radiators and all that stuff
  70. >> from the consumption
  71. >> from no no no from how much radiators
  72. do you need in a building and so
  73. really really the basics were really the
  74. basics of engineering
  75. >> no I'm from upper Austria I'm I'm
  76. originally from upper Austria but and
  77. some the school and the
  78. possibility to take this
  79. construction school brought me to Vienna
  80. because the opportunity was here.
  81. >> and yeah, Vena did not leave me.
  82. >> So I beautiful city.
  83. >> It's a beautiful city and huge of huge
  84. advantages and possibilities.
  85. >> Yeah, we were traveling for a week. We
  86. can tell you that we miss we a lot
  87. >> really already after a week. the last
  88. days were like, "Oh, I want to be back."
  89. >> Okay. Okay. Great. Great to hear that.
  90. >> please tell the professor about your
  91. journey.
  92. >> and yeah, with the with the
  93. starting counting the radiators
  94. and all that stuff. it was a bit
  95. boring honestly this this this type of
  96. of engineering. But then I had the
  97. chance to step into the energy energy
  98. field, energy department. were looking
  99. for some stuff and here I
  100. had I had the chance to start with
  101. the design of biomass heating plants
  102. >> and at the late 90s it was late 90s
  103. there was a big trend in Austria and
  104. also c Eastern Europe already to make
  105. studies look into that field into
  106. district heating systems on biomass
  107. from from biomass
  108. >> from biomass bio district heating
  109. systems
  110. >> biomethan or
  111. >> no no no
  112. not even electricity just heat just the
  113. heat production so the district
  114. heating system is not that common in
  115. Austria
  116. >> so
  117. also it was I think the first initiative
  118. from the Austrian government to step out
  119. of fossile energy
  120. >> it Kyoto protocol was at that time
  121. the leading the leading guideline and
  122. document
  123. >> and here Austria government in so
  124. so set in place a subsidy scheme for
  125. this kind of biomass district heating
  126. systems
  127. >> that's it and when was it
  128. >> it was the late late '9s
  129. >> late ' 90s
  130. >> and now there is this project that we're
  131. going to talk about in the conference in
  132. May which is the geothermal
  133. project that they are making now for
  134. district heating
  135. >> in Vienna.
  136. >> In Vienna. Yeah. Geothermal district
  137. heating.
  138. >> Super. Okay.
  139. >> So, yeah. Yeah. It's very interesting.
  140. we were seeing lately like how the
  141. energy is consumed in households
  142. >> and it's almost 70% only heating and to
  143. heat water.
  144. >>.
  145. >> For consumption and for heating
  146. the house. So maybe we could go into the
  147. to get into your home because you
  148. told us something about your
  149. the technology that you have
  150. implemented after all or your knowledge
  151. in your
  152. >> like your own experiment in your house.
  153. >> So yeah it would be nice to know how
  154. is that experience with all that the
  155. PV project that you have electric
  156. vehicle the heat pump because you
  157. started with radiator so how do you do
  158. it now in your house if you could tell
  159. us a bit how is the
  160. >> and also I think most of it was
  161. learning from your product right so if
  162. you can also tell what you learned from
  163. your project and what you did it at
  164. home.
  165. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Thanks for asking and
  166. great that you have still memories to
  167. that what I what I told you in the in
  168. the class. during the lecture of the
  169. energy concepts during preparation of
  170. the documents I was I was thinking about
  171. some practical examples and I had some
  172. studies which I presented all the time.
  173. and then I had also I thought okay
  174. but these are big scale the energy
  175. concepts on big scales but also I think
  176. important for our energy transition are
  177. the energy on a on a small scale what
  178. everybody in his household can do.
  179. >> Okay.
  180. >> And this I implemented then into my
  181. my course what what I did and yeah
  182. what what what did I do? I had a
  183. very small house with 90 square meters.
  184. >>.
  185. >> It was built at the 70s. And I also
  186. thought and this was during our well
  187. let's say energy crisis where energy
  188. price gas price went up. I had a gas
  189. boiler installed for central heating and
  190. I thought okay what what can I do? What
  191. can I do here? And then I said okay look
  192. I'm in the working in the field. I'm
  193. teaching I'm lecturing in that field
  194. then I need to be to be a positive
  195. example and be a be here running here in
  196. this in this in this field and
  197. >> as I told you a first thing is to reduce
  198. the energy consumption. So my concept
  199. was then what is the isolation bad
  200. isolation. So first the step was to make
  201. an isolation on the building.
  202. >> Okay., and on the walls on the walls,
  203. walls for
  204. >> walls, roof and windows and doors. I
  205. exchanged except the carrying walls
  206. everything there.
  207. >> Unfortunately, I could not improve the
  208. the floor because then I would have
  209. to need to dismantle everything, all
  210. the furniture.
  211. >> Cost effective at the end, right? It's
  212. too much spent to change all the floor
  213. and then install and bring.
  214. >> Yeah. Yeah. And the gains the gains
  215. of it is
  216. >> your house it's in a building or it's
  217. like a
  218. >> No, it's a it's a standalone building
  219. almost. Yeah.
  220. >> Yeah. That maybe we could share because
  221. it was very insightful insightful from
  222. the classes is that the most cost
  223. effective energy efficiency measure in a
  224. household is to insulate the roof.
  225. >> From the beginning besides everything is
  226. important from the design that is much
  227. cheaper. you can save 25 30% of the
  228. of the features to have a sustainable
  229. house in the design is very important
  230. and to insulate the roof. So you
  231. started for that to cover the house
  232. >> to so to reduce as much as I could
  233. the energy demand
  234. >> and then I was thinking okay what is the
  235. next step according to my lecture is
  236. then thinking on adapting the energy
  237. production
  238. >> okay
  239. >> and here I said okay well is the what is
  240. the alternative to the gas gas boiler
  241. it's in my case the air water heat
  242. pump.
  243. >> heat pump. Yeah, that's the
  244. >> So, I replaced the boiler through the
  245. water heat pump and doing that I
  246. needed to come back to my radiator issue
  247. from the beginning. You remember what I
  248. said? I had to replace my radiators
  249. because also the these radiators has
  250. been very old and were on high
  251. temperature level design because sure if
  252. you have a gas a gas boiler it runs on
  253. high temperature flow rate. and
  254. I had to do then going for the
  255. heat pump and so reduce here the
  256. flow temperature and these demands and
  257. and change of the radiators.
  258. you had it like you had the
  259. passion for it. So but a lot of people
  260. may watch it or and a lot of people
  261. who were your neighbors. What was the
  262. reaction? And did you did you they asked
  263. you for a moral thing asking you for how
  264. much consumption that you were able
  265. to save and were you able to maybe
  266. consult some other people?
  267. >> Oh yes. Yes. It was it was the right
  268. time because we had it before it was
  269. just the just let's say the climate
  270. issue in television in public media.
  271. >> but at that time when I did it, we
  272. had really the crisis. We had a rising
  273. prices and well the gas the gas
  274. demand or gas supply was in danger and
  275. in discussion and so on and so this was
  276. a good
  277. >> year.
  278. >>?
  279. >> What year? This was 20 20 2020 2020
  280. 2021 at that time
  281. >> it was co pandemic and yeah after
  282. after that the war yeah and I
  283. shared I shared my thoughts with my
  284. neighbors what I'm doing
  285. >> and they were skeptical at the at the
  286. beginning and then well the first one
  287. said I also decided to change. I also
  288. decided to change my gas into into a
  289. heat pump.
  290. >> Nice. So,
  291. >> and I also shared and then what what
  292. I told you then the PV the PV plant
  293. because with having the heat
  294. pump I also wanted to produce my
  295. own energy. So, not to be to take the
  296. energy from the grid to take others
  297. energy. I wanted to produce my own
  298. energy. what I need for my comfort.
  299. >> Perfect.
  300. >> So then I took took the investment for
  301. the PV plant and also this I shared with
  302. my neighbors and they followed. I had
  303. here a very nice group where they said
  304. okay they are doing the same with a time
  305. shift and with all the discussions made
  306. them think and consider their demands
  307. their advantages and they opted and
  308. decided for the same investment and this
  309. was amazing
  310. >> really really I was really happy that
  311. the these people which were not so
  312. detached to energy or renewables
  313. >> how much was the cost for to change
  314. everything.
  315. >> but it
  316. >> you already defined you about 90 square
  317. meter
  318. >> yeah well let's say all together
  319. >> around around
  320. >> around say 30 to 40, 000
  321. >> all together
  322. >> but with heat pump
  323. >> with heat pump with the radiators before
  324. insulation heat pump PV plant battery
  325. storage and so on. So for sure you made
  326. the numbers. What is the
  327. >> ROI?
  328. >> ROI. Yeah. In how many years you feel
  329. the pay?
  330. >> Yeah. So I adapted my presentation to
  331. the students and exactly that I did
  332. include in the u presentation which I
  333. had the pleasure to hold the past
  334. weekend
  335. >> and I just calculated the PV the PV
  336. installation
  337. >> and here I said within six years I've
  338. recovered the investment just for
  339. the PV and the battery package
  340. >> and heat pump is it's too rentable or
  341. >> let invite me once again and I will
  342. present the exact figures after
  343. that. I don't have it now
  344. >> and we went to event in Amsterdam
  345. last week and they were talking about
  346. zero bills houses. So how is your house
  347. in bills after all that
  348. investment? You have small bills or
  349. paying the same? How how has been the
  350. difference? H yeah.
  351. regarding the bills, my ambition is
  352. still to be energy or talk on the
  353. electrical level.
  354. >> So I analyzed my PV plus battery. I
  355. installed a 10.2 kW hours battery in my
  356. house.
  357. >>. And this winter I figured
  358. out that we have some foggy days and
  359. after the foggy days we have very bright
  360. sunshine, huge sun and I fill up the
  361. battery and inject a lot of energy in
  362. the grid into the grid in winter time.
  363. >> Okay.
  364. >> So and the logical consequence was
  365. then to increase the battery the battery
  366. storage capacity and they installed the
  367. second 10 KV kilowatt hours package. So
  368. I have 20 kilowatt hours and since this
  369. in installation I don't need any power
  370. from the grid.
  371. >> Wow.
  372. >> So I can
  373. >> that's the consumption.
  374. >> So yeah other otherwise I had well
  375. the full load battery full loaded
  376. battery in let's say noon time and
  377. during the afternoon and during the
  378. night I discharged the battery and from
  379. 3:00 onwards I then took electricity
  380. from the grid. feedback.
  381. >> But now now I can with that battery I
  382. have still 20 30% in the morning and if
  383. sun rises then it fills up the battery
  384. again.
  385. >> Okay. And now I don't know if you
  386. have more this technological toys in
  387. your house but the electric vehicle how
  388. do you do it during the night is part of
  389. this load package?
  390. >> Yeah. well my my electrical
  391. vehicle was one part of my personal
  392. energy contribution. So that I said okay
  393. if I want to have comfort in
  394. transportation I don't want to
  395. destroy the environment. I don't
  396. want to emit CO2. I invest in electric
  397. vehicle. yeah but this does not match
  398. to the size of PV plant what I have
  399. >> because my electrical vehicle has a
  400. battery capacity of 77 kilowatt hours
  401. and I just produce let's say the
  402. 20 for the battery I have in the
  403. house. If I would charge with that the
  404. the car the car would be partly full and
  405. and I would have nothing left for my
  406. house.
  407. >> True. So I have I charge it from the
  408. grid the car but I selected here a
  409. 100% renewable energy heat supply energy
  410. supply electrical energy supplier
  411. from wind wind energy
  412. >> amazing so you can choose here yeah you
  413. have
  414. >> yeah I have the freedom to choose
  415. whatever supplier I will take and I
  416. took a wind energy developer who
  417. sells directly the wind power and
  418. that this electricity I feed in my my
  419. car. So I'm not from my own PV plant,
  420. but I still know that's 100% green
  421. electricity.
  422. >> Maybe I want the nerdy part of the
  423. details, but so you have an electrical
  424. circuit independent for the car and
  425. the house. You have 2 mters or only 1
  426. meter?
  427. >> No, it's only one meter. only one
  428. >> and everything is split in.
  429. >> You're basically saying that you will
  430. never charge the car from your in winter
  431. time. In summer time I would have enough
  432. electricity to charge it but not to
  433. fully charge it because also their
  434. production during the day is not from 20
  435. to 80% of the battery. I would need two
  436. days when I've pl when I plug in and I
  437. use the surplus energy of my house of my
  438. PV plant then I will put it into the car
  439. but it takes me two days to be fully
  440. charged.
  441. >> Okay.
  442. >> Okay. Okay. That is very amazing.
  443. >> It was very insightful inspiring.
  444. >> Yeah. And inspiring as well.
  445. I'm glad that you're doing it and you
  446. already being able to do it for your
  447. neighbors as well.
  448. >> Yeah. It's like be the change you
  449. want to see in the world.
  450. >> This is the an example.
  451. >> Thank you. Thank you.
  452. >> but Alex, we would like to go
  453. forward to understand a bit more
  454. about the Austrian landscape.
  455. >>.
  456. >> how how how do you see you
  457. said you're old, right?
  458. >> I know you're young, but let's say from
  459. ' 90s onwards, how did you see the
  460. the energy landscape changing in
  461. Austria?. yeah, we had some some
  462. very small trends to renewables.
  463. and in Austria basically it was on
  464. the heating site it was connected to
  465. wood..
  466. >> So it was the pallets oven. There
  467. was well a development of that. We had
  468. wood chips wood chips district heating.
  469. What I what I told you at the beginning
  470. >> biomass this kind of woody woody
  471. biomass.
  472. >> this was a trend trend at that time.
  473. yeah then after the heating then
  474. also we had the feeding tariff a new
  475. feed in tariff law. It was 2004 I guess
  476. when they started and then they did
  477. reshape the law afterwards and then we
  478. had a trend into cogeneration.
  479. >> Okay.
  480. >> So that installing a biomos boiler
  481. producing steam basic basically and you
  482. have the heat and
  483. >> serial heat to generate more steam more
  484. >> more steam and yeah right heat and
  485. electricity. but here at the
  486. beginning we had the issue that the law
  487. did not
  488. force let's say the project development
  489. is such that you have electrical
  490. production and the need for the heat
  491. use. So we had some projects at the
  492. beginning using just electricity and
  493. as we know from from the lecture we just
  494. use let's say 22 25% of the energy of
  495. the wood and the rest
  496. >> it's heat
  497. >> it hits the to the to the
  498. environment. So you move as a country it
  499. started with renewables in biomass and
  500. then I have seen plenty of windmills. So
  501. in some point
  502. >> right yeah
  503. >> were they fostered or it was natural
  504. from the market
  505. >> it was also a let's say a result
  506. of the feeding tariff law what we had
  507. >> so that some companies entrepreneurs
  508. pioneers at that time stepped into
  509. the electrical energy production and
  510. said wind power is mine and they were
  511. if you if you're going from Vienna to
  512. towards Hungary, you see in that area
  513. a lot of windmills because this is
  514. really really good for that. We have a
  515. very constant a relatively high wind
  516. speed and perfect for that. So there
  517. was a development from the electrical
  518. point of view in wind energy. -.
  519. >> I have a question about like wood as a
  520. as a carrier energy carrier
  521. >> because where I come from wood was
  522. like okay you should not be using wood
  523. for cooking food it's pollution I
  524. mean of course there there's so many
  525. other stuff about it but using wood as a
  526. carrier if you can explain that
  527. how exactly it's still renewable.
  528. Yeah. Well, this is a good discussion.
  529. if you if I burn wood, you have a you
  530. have you produce CO2. This is a chemical
  531. reaction. But, considering the whole
  532. life cycle of a tree and the combustion
  533. of it, and taking into consideration
  534. that we in Austria have a reforestation
  535. regime and law and everybody is
  536. interested. If you own a forest, you're
  537. interested in keeping the forest as
  538. such. Even if you take a wood a tree out
  539. of it, you replant something so that you
  540. have still a forest. and taking
  541. this circle into consideration, it
  542. was defined that wood biomass is
  543. considered as COR neutral.
  544. >> Okay. for the whole life
  545. >> for the whole life cycle considering the
  546. whole life cycle from growing up
  547. absorbing capturing the CO2 until using
  548. it burning it then
  549. >> it would not be same for every country
  550. right like it's
  551. >> no yeah right you were right and
  552. this this discussion started started
  553. again also on a new level having in
  554. mind that this discussion about the red
  555. three directive
  556. >> where this especially
  557. was reconsidered if we should stick
  558. on the zero zerocarbon
  559. emission neutral strategy because in
  560. fact you have a more CO2
  561. production when you burn it in a very in
  562. a shorter period of time than the
  563. tree takes it to absorb the CO2. So
  564. if you have the lifespan of the tree,
  565. it's 30 40 years and you release that
  566. that CO2 within days or hours even.
  567. >> So the there is an imbalance and yeah
  568. this is a discussion going on if wood
  569. should be still considered as neutral.
  570. >> Yeah. Also we saw it in a lecture about
  571. architecture that it's the same debate
  572. from house made of good if they are
  573. neutral or not because what happened
  574. after
  575. >> that's a discussion it's a hot
  576. >> yeah it's a it's it's a it's a good it's
  577. a good thing and also I think one
  578. one thing was using the biomass for
  579. energy production should we do that or
  580. should we leave the tree in a forest
  581. which still absorbs CO2 two and the
  582. other is releasing CO2 but compensating
  583. the energy demand what you have which
  584. might be fossil fuel. So
  585. >> yeah long discussion
  586. >> another episode just for
  587. >> just for those terminology. No but
  588. but it's always great that to ask
  589. such questions because in the whole
  590. dialogue that we are having about energy
  591. transition to be we always need to make
  592. sure that even in a region at EU at
  593. CE
  594. for Austria there are a lot of different
  595. biases that you need to consider. So
  596. >> yeah, just going forward into that like
  597. you of course you have a lot
  598. of background in Austria but we know
  599. that how much of the work that you have
  600. done in central and the eastern
  601. Europe
  602. >> how you saw the energy landscape
  603. transitioning
  604. and over there like all across if you
  605. have some examples.
  606. >>.
  607. Yeah. in the eastern eastern
  608. Europe was also very interested into
  609. into the technologies and into the
  610. schemes as well. also here biomass
  611. in that region where where wood is
  612. available was an issue or
  613. thinking on my project in Romania in
  614. the wind energy sector. also where
  615. here the area is suitable for wind
  616. also. Here this was this was a thing
  617. which they took early enough. and
  618. yeah
  619. try to try to attract also to investors
  620. and bless you and main main driver
  621. for that was the establishment of a
  622. feeding
  623. >> was the feeding was the feeding tariff
  624. system. If there was a feed and tariff
  625. system in place, this
  626. gives the let's say economical ground to
  627. invest to have a stable investment to
  628. get funds even. So there were there if
  629. some feeding tariff system was in place
  630. in Romania we have the green we had
  631. the green certificate or if you have a
  632. direct feed in tariff whatever whatever
  633. system if you have something then such
  634. such projects an incentive system in
  635. which case ever then investments were
  636. attracted into into that field.
  637. >> Are there now some feed and tariff
  638. regime in some countries in central
  639. eastern Europe or or they don't have
  640. feed and tariff.
  641. actually I did not follow that
  642. that what is currently
  643. >>
  644. but yeah I guess there are still
  645. still some feed in tariffs because the
  646. existing plants wind PV projects
  647. whatever does need this this feed and
  648. tariff system to survive let's say
  649. >> yeah well if someone knows about some
  650. feed and tariffing leave in the comments
  651. to keep learning right because what
  652. is happening there in central and
  653. eastern Europe and it's one of the
  654. purpose or or this talks it's to
  655. showcase what is happening there so
  656. >> doing audience interview
  657. >> participate yeah that's
  658. super
  659. >> but also you got to
  660. work in Romania was there some other
  661. country in Eastern Europe
  662. >> I think Croatia Croatia. Yeah,
  663. >> Croatia a lot at the beginning also in
  664. Hungary because there was a alo from
  665. Austrian from the Austrian government
  666. some subsidies for supporting their
  667. district heating system. So if you have
  668. a neighbor a neighbor city which is
  669. polluting fossil emissions emissions
  670. out of fossil energy then also
  671. government did also give some subsidies
  672. and we did some projects over there also
  673. some district heating systems on guess
  674. what biomass.
  675. Yeah, we love our
  676. >> P.
  677. >> But also just to understand do you
  678. feel with your experience of working

  680. do you see there there are a lot of
  681. projects happening over there but what
  682. what what projects you think should be
  683. in priority for the energy
  684. transition that we envision.
  685. Yeah, the thinking also on the Austrian
  686. market where maybe other frame
  687. conditions are but the problems I
  688. guess are always the same is the
  689. distribution network the electrical
  690. distribution network
  691. because I think on the small scale
  692. household level we can replace
  693. fossil energy through going into
  694. electricity.
  695. We can use heat pumps for our heating
  696. and should really keep the fossil
  697. energy for that industries where they
  698. really need fossil energy to have high
  699. temperature processes for instance where
  700. we need to burn something
  701. >> not for everything that's
  702. >> not for everything because I think we
  703. should have we should know now that this
  704. is really a high value
  705. >> the fossil energy is high value in
  706. the in so far that it's limited
  707. because at some point we are out of
  708. out of energy and to keep that energy
  709. what we have for that industries
  710. which really needs it
  711. >> and we should not waste it for let's
  712. say space heating
  713. >> yeah exactly made sense
  714. >> and also for transportation we would
  715. have other other solutions to go with
  716. >> and I have a question in the sense
  717. that we hear that now CE as a
  718. region is not going to be dependent on
  719. Russian gas and all of that because of
  720. everything that is happening but it is
  721. still Hungary still had some of them
  722. coming and Austria too. No, they it was
  723. caught in once a
  724. >> couple of months.
  725. >> Well, yeah. I just can believe what
  726. what is told in the media
  727. >> and there and there's a trend going away
  728. from from Russian Russian gas. I
  729. know that we are still we have still a
  730. contract but I think we are on
  731. solving that issue that we are
  732. obliged to take gas
  733. and we have other sources already
  734. where to take the natural gas from.
  735. >> Yeah. my question is bit more on
  736. as we think about the energy mix
  737. scenario for this region then
  738. >> away from gas. yeah we talked
  739. about a lot of renewable potential what
  740. else do you see as a new technology
  741. which is just specified for C as a
  742. region and not we are not
  743. dependent on let's say like western
  744. Europe about Scandinavia just for
  745. Austria like neighboring countries
  746. and like further away which has coast so
  747. what do you see what's going to be the
  748. new energy scenario for all of this
  749. region

  751. >> Yeah, really, really, really, really.
  752. Yeah. What? What could be

  758. to distinguish a bit and the real as
  759. as we said we should go into
  760. electrician into electricity which is
  761. our driver for well mobility and for

  763. industries we have some energy demands
  764. which it's eventually or partially be
  765. can be replaced by electricity as well.
  766. >> But on the other hand side, we need some
  767. some energy energy carrier to
  768. supply this sort of this sort of energy
  769. for this industrial production.
  770. Yeah. And here an alternative is
  771. hydrogen from from my perspective.
  772. And we analyzed this in a in a study
  773. in a Romanian project
  774. where we
  775. thought about the solution for district
  776. heating companies and this is one one
  777. thing we looked into.

  779. >> Yeah. To use hydrogen. but yeah
  780. this is also the next high value in a
  781. chic carrier because we say when we talk
  782. about the hydrogen we say green hydrogen
  783. so we used to we have to use renewable
  784. energy for that so therefore we have to
  785. have the capacity of electrical power to
  786. produce all the hydrogen we need and
  787. therefore we need to install much much
  788. more renewable energy production
  789. plants Yeah,
  790. >> on that note just the followup thing
  791. because you and I completely agree
  792. that for electricity generation
  793. there's a lot happening in if we take
  794. the example of Austria as well but for
  795. industry for all the high high heat
  796. processes that they have they require
  797. their own energy carrier there
  798. could be a certain degree of
  799. electrification that can be done and I
  800. believe they everyone is aiming for it
  801. but you need secondary energy carrier
  802. >> what is the timeline you see because
  803. this is the interesting stuff that I ask
  804. everyone everyone is guessing but
  805. let's see what's our guess here what
  806. do you see like going forward what is
  807. the scenario that we're looking at
  808. >> yeah well on the one hand side we
  809. have our scenario which which is
  810. Well,
  811. the perspective of our government that
  812. in 2030 for Austria, we would like to be
  813. we would like to produce 100% of
  814. electricity from renewables
  815. >> and 2040
  816. carbon neutral.
  817. >> Carbon neutral, right? This is the
  818. target set by the Austrian government
  819. for some some years ago.
  820. >>.
  821. >> yeah. Well we know that we
  822. increase our electrical consumption year
  823. by year.
  824. >> Yeah.
  825. >> Through heat pumps, electrical demands
  826. and other other things what we have but
  827. we are not that fast to increase our
  828. production capacities.
  829. So just just on that just on the demand
  830. side and the production side the demand
  831. gets gets bigger and this consumes the
  832. additional electrical production which
  833. we which we install every year. So
  834. >> this is for
  835. >> the gap that we are talking about
  836. >> I think so around
  837. >> 20 20% around 20% something which we
  838. have to run after we have the big
  839. advantage of hydropower in Austria.
  840. >> This is the beautiful day
  841. and electricity.
  842. Perfect. Perfect. Right. This is the
  843. hydrop power which gives the high
  844. percentage of renewable content already.
  845. But the last 20% is really hard to be
  846. done.
  847. >> Yeah.
  848. >> Because on the other hand side you see
  849. well our colleagues, professor
  850. colleagues and other people
  851. prepared the studies. therefore said
  852. that wind and PV is there the
  853. alternative for Austria to make this
  854. gap but looking into the media as well
  855. nobody wants them nobody wants a
  856. windmill or nobody wants a PV project
  857. >> that's a banana
  858. problem right build anything near my
  859. place
  860. >> not even PV
  861. >> not even yeah PV PV on the house this is
  862. not a question but the big big PV
  863. Big P projects
  864. >> utility scale
  865. >> utility scale in megawatt scale. This is
  866. this is the this is the issue to first
  867. get a dedicated area where you allowed
  868. to and then to get this dedication. This
  869. is this is the big issue. So we are
  870. running after the electrical
  871. renewable part. but then thinking on
  872. the next step to add additional
  873. electrical power to produce this new
  874. energy carrier let's say hydrogen or or
  875. or ammonia or whatever whatever you
  876. have in mind in that sense so this is
  877. this is really the challenge what we
  878. have
  879. >> yeah yeah the last
  880. >> the last the last percentage of it's
  881. >> but professor and Alex
  882. do you see that the this region of
  883. central and eastern Europe with the EU
  884. definition the 11 countries and Austria
  885. most advanced system energy
  886. system compared to like the
  887. neighbors for sure what what do you
  888. think the their regional cooperation can
  889. be to making sure that the other energy
  890. system evolve like of course you get
  891. to do a lot of projects there there are
  892. a lot of projects happening they're
  893. lacking some knowledge transfer for sure
  894. but Austria has a lot of opportunity as
  895. well in terms of toal cooperation and
  896. and doing the thing that had not been
  897. done like from your experience what are
  898. the challenges that you had to face in
  899. some of those countries if you can nail
  900. >> yeah personally we started in 2010
  901. the development of a biomass
  902. generation plant which we could never
  903. even start start in start building it.
  904. We were stuck in the doc preparation of
  905. documentation applying for permits and
  906. if we got one we lost another one. So
  907. >> that was in
  908. >> ination.
  909. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So the on the one
  910. hand side we face the bureaucratic
  911. burdens
  912. >> permitting
  913. >> permits the permit structures and
  914. and that I don't know if this was
  915. because we have been foreign investors
  916. if a local investor would have been
  917. faster or it would be easier for them
  918. but I can just share my experience here
  919. and this we tried a lot of
  920. the a lot of time to it forward.
  921. We brought in the knowhow. We had the
  922. knowhow how to design and we had all the
  923. papers but get the permits and all
  924. the stuff. Yeah.
  925. >> Yeah. And could would you say that
  926. it's a knowledge transfer gap that we
  927. have with the CE region and Western
  928. Europe like for example in order
  929. to understand more the projects to give
  930. the permits because it's better for the
  931. electric electrical matrix or in other
  932. countries like Romania you mentioned or
  933. Polonia who are the carbonizing
  934. fast as we have seen. how do you see
  935. the importance of knowledge transfer?
  936. >>.
  937. >> Oh well technologically wise I think
  938. there is no need of no knowledge
  939. transfer. They have brilliance brilliant
  940. technicians over there in Romania in
  941. Croatia. I work together. I have dear
  942. friends over there. they are technicians
  943. and we made projects together. So
  944. everybody benefits from the experience
  945. from the others. So I think there is no
  946. need to tell them how to what to do.
  947. >> well it's the structure
  948. itself how how to set up on a on a
  949. a higher level such such things. What
  950. what is the intention?
  951. because I think here
  952. the affordable
  953. cost of energy
  954. >> this is one thing this is on the
  955. governmental level which should be
  956. considered first before
  957. promoting the subsidy scheme or so
  958. >> because I've seen the initiatives of the
  959. government. Yes, we promote here a
  960. subsidizing scheme, a feed in tariff,
  961. green certificates. And then the
  962. government figured out, okay, when the
  963. project realized what does it cost
  964. >> on the budget level, what do I need to
  965. pay according to the law I give
  966. >> to this company and then we have seen in
  967. the countries different changes than in
  968. the in the in the laws. because
  969. finally somebody needs to pay that and
  970. this is a basically the population and
  971. here we need to be very careful what
  972. a population can afford to pay for the
  973. energy.
  974. >> Okay. But would you say that renewable
  975. energy is cheaper than fossil energy?
  976. Right.
  977. renewable energy. oh, it
  978. depends when when which which year you
  979. consider when we when we say the years
  980. before we had really cheap energy and my
  981. my personal opinion the energy was too
  982. cheap
  983. >> because not really energy saving
  984. measures were even considered also here
  985. not in Austria. So here because we had
  986. really cheap energy to cheap gas
  987. >> what we then saw when we had the
  988. increase of the gas prices that the
  989. energy has a value and it's really worse
  990. to save the energy to re to think if I
  991. should take the car
  992. if I should do this trip or not
  993. >> if I should take the plane or not or I
  994. can do my my conversation why I miss
  995. teams
  996. >> but your personal life in some point and
  997. >> then you realize how important is we
  998. give it like granted but
  999. >> yeah we give it for granted because at
  1000. the petrol station okay we can afford
  1001. the price
  1002. >> but I think this is also one thing the
  1003. the energy should have the real value
  1004. >> that we really are forced more or
  1005. attracted not not forced let's say more
  1006. attracted to save the energy to be
  1007. more respectful in the use of energy.
  1008. >> Yeah, it's well part of the our mission
  1009. is also to transfer knowledge to the
  1010. citizens or not energy related
  1011. professionals and people.
  1012. >> Yeah. And so
  1013. >> magic of television.
  1014. >> Yeah. we were talking about the
  1015. differences that you see in
  1016. Western and Eastern Europe in terms of
  1017. energy transition
  1018. >> the essentially not just with obtaining
  1019. per permit or doing a project but
  1020. what are the differences you feel that
  1021. the regional challenges
  1022. >> and opportunity too.
  1023. >>..
  1024. >> Yeah. I think there there is a
  1025. interest a high interest in new
  1026. technologies.
  1027. thinking on the district heating
  1028. systems the existing ones with old
  1029. installations.
  1030. they're seeking for new technologies.
  1031. So let's say not new invented
  1032. technologies but for them new to be
  1033. installed. So to be replaced
  1034. this is this is something what what I
  1035. figured out in Eastern Europe.
  1036. they know the technologies as I said
  1037. there is no need to teach them
  1038. something in that sense they know
  1039. this very very good but it's it's
  1040. difficult for them to implement because
  1041. coming from
  1042. the population they need to pay for the
  1043. energy and they pay less because the
  1044. interests of the government the local
  1045. government there is to provide cheap
  1046. energy to the population
  1047. So
  1048. there with a cheap energy they cannot do
  1049. that big investments.
  1050. So when I would sum up it's a big
  1051. structural change would need to happen.
  1052. So to in to allow the increase of the
  1053. population's
  1054. contribution to the energy system so
  1055. that they need to pay a bit more
  1056. >> so that investments can be taken from
  1057. the operators of the district
  1058. heating systems
  1059. >> to replace to renew to install new
  1060. technologies even renewable technologies
  1061. >> and then to contribute here to the to
  1062. the reduction of energy. Yeah, there was
  1063. a discussion in the event that that we
  1064. went in Amsterdam about
  1065. somebody has to pay the
  1066. >> the bill
  1067. >> the bill the energy transition
  1068. investment. So
  1069. >> how to do it in collaboration with
  1070. government? How can the investment
  1071. assure certain period of return of
  1072. investment
  1073. some certain energy price? So this is
  1074. a we will say that a current discussion
  1075. that who is going to pay the energy
  1076. transition investment.
  1077. >>.
  1078. >> Right.
  1079. >> Yeah. Right. And I think we should pay
  1080. it now in small portions by higher
  1081. energy prices
  1082. >> many years
  1083. >> then to pay the future damages
  1084. what we have on the nature.
  1085. >> Exactly.
  1086. >> That's all. we have flats, we have
  1087. storms etc.
  1088. >> and I think now to increase the price
  1089. a bit to change to make the energy
  1090. transition possible. I think it's the
  1091. better way then have cheap energy and
  1092. then finally have to invest a lot in
  1093. >> recovering from from the damages.
  1094. >> Where are you on nuclear
  1095. nuclear energy? Austria we
  1096. know where it stands but you got
  1097. to work a lot in Hungary and Romania as
  1098. well and they have slightly different
  1099. opinion and Romania still has a lot of
  1100. functional nuclear
  1101. >> plants. Right.
  1102. >> Right. Right. And I think also Croatia
  1103. has a share in the in another
  1104. neighbors neighbors plan. But however I
  1105. I personally did not follow honestly the
  1106. the nuclear the nuclear issue. I have a
  1107. personal opinion and let's say if if you
  1108. are just looking into CO2 neutrality
  1109. then okay yeah it's not in polluting
  1110. CO2.
  1111. >>. if you are saying okay for
  1112. the renew your renewable energy and the
  1113. energy transition pass you need a lot of
  1114. power and okay with one nuclear power
  1115. plant you can inject a lot of electrical
  1116. power okay would also be a benefit but
  1117. we know all all the
  1118. danger is going going in parallel and
  1119. the real costs so I think the
  1120. costs of it. because normally
  1121. this energy is subsidized or the
  1122. investment is subsidized to reach out
  1123. the cheap energy and if you have real
  1124. costs it's not comparable is much higher
  1125. than the renewable energy.
  1126. >> Yeah. And maybe not going too deep but
  1127. it's also something about energy
  1128. independency right geopolitically also
  1129. where do you get the material from right
  1130. too many
  1131. >> factors that it makes
  1132. Thank thank you that you mention this
  1133. the energy neutrality because yeah you
  1134. can
  1135. say you are believing in climate change
  1136. or not but I can say it I feel the
  1137. climate change if we are if this is
  1138. belonging to CO2 emission I cannot
  1139. say I'm not the expert in
  1140. >> are like
  1141. >> the graphs are in that in that direction
  1142. experts the science says
  1143. >> yeah but we were in the middle of
  1144. very interesting thought about
  1145. >> energy neutrality energy independence

  1147. politically so you were going

  1149. even if you're not believing in the
  1150. in the climate change
  1151. >> then I always say into my lectures we
  1152. should do renewable energy to be energy
  1153. independent

  1155. >> because with everything and also coming
  1156. back to my project. I try to be
  1157. energy independent, produce my energy,
  1158. not to be depending on the others
  1159. on probably fossile energy producers
  1160. which are connecting we need to need
  1161. to produce the electricity because
  1162. nothing else is available currently.
  1163. yeah so to be independent should be our
  1164. driver
  1165. >> and we see
  1166. the energy prices and the war
  1167. what causes the high energy prices we
  1168. are depending on fossil energy supply.
  1169. We in Austria are not producing that
  1170. much fossil energy, not not the gas, not
  1171. the petrol that much. We have some very
  1172. small resources but not that much. The
  1173. big one we need to import and this
  1174. should be our driver to go into the
  1175. direction of renewables. If we are not
  1176. believing climate change is a good thing
  1177. a good thing to work against.
  1178. >> Yeah. Well, actually in Vienna this
  1179. winter, I don't remember one snow maybe,
  1180. but no no no day with a strong strong
  1181. snow, right? When when I came here,
  1182. people told me, "Yeah, but it's very
  1183. cold city where you're going to have a
  1184. snow, but the last winter it was
  1185. >> you did not find it."
  1186. >> No, no, no. You wanted to ski in Vienna,
  1187. but fortunately, no. No ski. No, but
  1188. it's interesting that it's whether
  1189. you believe in climate change or not, it
  1190. it's happening.
  1191. >> It's a hope.
  1192. >> So, yeah.
  1193. >> So, yeah. No but we're just asking
  1194. you about like I think what we are
  1195. trying to also do is uncover
  1196. complexities of this region in
  1197. terms of energy transition about energy
  1198. ecosystem energy system what's what's
  1199. exactly happening me living in
  1200. in Netherlands for last 5 years and
  1201. a I got to know a lot about the western
  1202. ecosystem because they the all the
  1203. projects that they are doing they're
  1204. really in the media you have a lot
  1205. of knack of what's happening in the in
  1206. the system but I feel this region
  1207. lacks a bit of transparency what is
  1208. happening exactly unless you really
  1209. go deeper into it and start
  1210. going into the local media a lot of
  1211. projects are not uncovering that what
  1212. can really happen there and how Can
  1213. it be coherent with the other system?
  1214. Like for example, you have advanced
  1215. ecosystem in let's call Scandinavia
  1216. being the most advanced ecosystem for
  1217. energy transition.
  1218. >> but you can't cannot have the same
  1219. projects going on in Scandinavia and
  1220. have something similar going on in
  1221. Romania or Hungary. So what do you see
  1222. how how do you b how do we balance that
  1223. at first so that their challenges are
  1224. also get it get the attention that it
  1225. really seeks.
  1226. Oh yeah. I think when you s when you say
  1227. advanced ecosystem, it's it's the total
  1228. it's the first understanding of the
  1229. population, the
  1230. connection to nature, the connection to
  1231. resources. I think it's it's a
  1232. development which the Scandian countries
  1233. met through already. we are on our
  1234. way and in Eastern Europe
  1235. this is in development still. So to have
  1236. a connection to that that this has a
  1237. value and need to take care own
  1238. responsibility for that.
  1239. >>.
  1240. >> because they came out of a an area
  1241. where somebody else took care of
  1242. everything. now they need to take
  1243. care about themselves and be responsible
  1244. for that. And I think my personal
  1245. opinion is that this needs to be
  1246. developed more. But I think this is a
  1247. matter of generation this self-
  1248. responsibility
  1249. >> and also it's an advant advantage as
  1250. well for the region because a lot has
  1251. not been done so they can learn and do
  1252. it better.
  1253. >> Yeah. If if they if they see an
  1254. advantage in doing it better.
  1255. >> Yeah. If they see it worked well in the
  1256. past years I had my home heated and
  1257. where the heat is coming from I don't
  1258. care then nothing will change but if
  1259. they will say okay I have own
  1260. responsibility to that and how where I'm
  1261. connected what I'm doing how much
  1262. energy I consume then I think we all
  1263. will here do something and I
  1264. would not say that it's just a thing in
  1265. in Eastern Europe I think everybody of
  1266. us here as well in Vienna in Austria
  1267. need more more responsibility self-
  1268. responsibility about what we are doing
  1269. what we are doing to our nature and how
  1270. we consume the energy what for we
  1271. consume
  1272. >> deep message I like it
  1273. >> yeah very well said and you think
  1274. like the innovation and the research
  1275. that is going on it should have some
  1276. original
  1277. weightage in it. So what I basically
  1278. means that when we say advanced
  1279. ecosystem it also means that why they
  1280. are advanced is because the
  1281. collaboration between the academy
  1282. industry and research organization is
  1283. way more coherent than
  1284. >> than ecosystems which are not that
  1285. advanced. So I believe you think that
  1286. there needs to be a bit more cooperation
  1287. between academia industry and the
  1288. research organization in this region
  1289. at a whole as well like for the whole
  1290. energy ecosystem.
  1291. >>. I think yeah the exchange of
  1292. of it would be a benefit
  1293. the exchange and the understanding of
  1294. each other
  1295. >> would be would be one thing because
  1296. we cannot do improvements in the nature
  1297. in the environment
  1298. give some obligations to the
  1299. industry to improve something when we
  1300. are not listening to the industry and
  1301. their demands. What do they do have?
  1302. >> We have now we are not in best
  1303. economic situations now in Austria.
  1304. and on the other hand said we
  1305. need to do something for the environment
  1306. but doing for the environment would
  1307. probably has a negative impact to the
  1308. industry which will not then gives an
  1309. economic impulse. So I think this need
  1310. to go hand in hand and both and also
  1311. industry need to have more understanding
  1312. that they need to do something but this
  1313. need to be balanced because otherwise
  1314. it's always a fight fight some this
  1315. prevails the industry prevails other one
  1316. the environmental issues
  1317. are prevailing. So this must be a
  1318. handinhand approach. both need to
  1319. have understanding for the other side
  1320. and that we are going forward.
  1321. >> We need to understand that we have to do
  1322. something. We have to adapt something
  1323. and but this must be in the balance
  1324. between industry and also the
  1325. environment but also the households
  1326. should be involved in this
  1327. >> consumers.
  1328. Correct. The consumers and consumers
  1329. because we had a big dis discussion
  1330. about
  1331. that people cannot cannot afford to heat
  1332. their homes. This also should not be
  1333. should not be the case. We should also
  1334. take care about this kind of
  1335. population who are suffering and
  1336. having problems to heat because this
  1337. should be a basic a basic need
  1338. which should be covered and so we as the
  1339. society has the obligation to take
  1340. also care on that group..
  1341. >> so that also here we do something for
  1342. the environment would mean some
  1343. investment would mean some increase of
  1344. costs on the consumer side but we should
  1345. not forget the people who cannot afford
  1346. these higher prices so that we also have
  1347. this this in mind and industry and
  1348. environment should go hand in hand not
  1349. against each other.
  1350. >> That's only to highlight two concept
  1351. that you have mentioned that it's
  1352. fantastic. It's a just transition like
  1353. to not forget the people that cannot
  1354. afford when the prices are high and the
  1355. other that it's something is a concept
  1356. that is powering us now in this project.
  1357. It's
  1358. energy transition will be possible only
  1359. if we work all together and aligned with
  1360. the information on the table. the
  1361. science backing us up backing us up
  1362. and yeah so alto together I think it's a
  1363. very good message
  1364. >> yeah that's that's our our way
  1365. of with the energy bridge what we are
  1366. trying to bridge it essentially all the
  1367. loss of energy transition it could be
  1368. policy makers it could be academia
  1369. industry just bringing them all together
  1370. and talk more
  1371. >> and be a bit more transparent with each
  1372. other because what we have noticed
  1373. that
  1374. >> what we have noticed is that yeah
  1375. like the platform that they are coming
  1376. together there's still gap between
  1377. transparency and I think there there
  1378. definitely a bit more need for
  1379. collaboration and they cannot wait to
  1380. for another conference or another I
  1381. don't know like another meeting to
  1382. collect collaborate they need a constant
  1383. touch with each other
  1384. >> and there's a need to establish touch
  1385. >> so that's where we come in and that's
  1386. what we aspire to do we are a
  1387. long way away from that and we are for
  1388. now like we're just trying to understand
  1389. that but we do see the transparency gap
  1390. and we would like to bridge that how do
  1391. you see as a concept what we are
  1392. envisioning
  1393. >> yeah you see what what should I say
  1394. perfect this does perfect match to that
  1395. what's currently needed to foster the
  1396. the energy transition to bridge to make
  1397. a bridge between different parties
  1398. different interests and to give more
  1399. let's say also more more knowhow in that
  1400. sense of understanding not so not not so
  1401. technical knowhow but more openness to
  1402. create the openness to all them and
  1403. bring them together to exchange to
  1404. exchange the experience and yeah then
  1405. Well, thank you. I appreciate it.

  1407. like how do you see the future of
  1408. energy sector? and also like what
  1409. kind of advice that you would go give
  1410. the young professionals
  1411. now that who enter like how do you see
  1412. it changing for if we talk about the
  1413. professional side of it for the work
  1414. side of it? what kind of job, what kind
  1415. of skills that people should have.
  1416. >>
  1417. yeah, the skills I think should should
  1418. have a basic a basic education in
  1419. energy and understanding of the
  1420. energy itself and then it depends on the
  1421. interest interests of everybody who
  1422. would like to go in a certain direction
  1423. and we have a broad field of we
  1424. tackled the wind power. So we increased
  1425. wind turbine sizes on the market
  1426. every year. You can always develop more
  1427. here or hydrochain or also these other
  1428. energy are carriers around that.
  1429. So that I think we need all of the punch
  1430. what we have here now in renewable
  1431. energy to well supply the
  1432. demand which we have in the future.
  1433. >> Okay. So, so there are different fields
  1434. you can go in. I think the most
  1435. important thing is that talking about
  1436. it and talking with your neighbors
  1437. explaining what you are doing and
  1438. and then they start to think about
  1439. this and find then then they find their
  1440. ways to adapt according to their needs
  1441. and also to their possibilities what
  1442. they what they can do.

  1444. what what you're talking about the
  1445. citizen engagement in the energy
  1446. transition. Do you do you have any
  1447. recommendation for policy makers in
  1448. this especially in central and
  1449. eastern Europe how they can make those
  1450. people like even I don't want to go
  1451. too deep into how much of the solar PB
  1452. that people are installing there but the
  1453. number is in very stark contrast to some
  1454. of the let's say if the if you see in
  1455. Netherlands or in Scandinavia because
  1456. there subsidies first of all but if the
  1457. citizen will demand there will be
  1458. subsidies did well in those country too
  1459. to how what do you think like could be
  1460. some recommendation for policy makers?
  1461. >>.
  1462. Yeah. thinking on that h how we
  1463. develop in our production and we talked
  1464. about what what we did achieve in
  1465. the different in the different areas.
  1466. and we see that the big on also from my
  1467. professional experience I see the big
  1468. projects
  1469. are lasting long.
  1470. and taking a lot of power and let's say
  1471. you cannot be sure if you are successful
  1472. at the final end with big projects.
  1473. >> So the smaller ones are easier to be
  1474. realized
  1475. and coming back to own responsibility
  1476. and maybe we are also responsibility to
  1477. produce that what we consume. Yeah.
  1478. >> and to policy makers, yeah, it could
  1479. be made a bit easier for the population
  1480. to invest to take investments because
  1481. the initial investment is really
  1482. huge. What you need to take for PV for
  1483. inverters and all the equipment you
  1484. have, you need to have an electrician
  1485. who gives you the final
  1486. certificate, the check of it at the
  1487. at the at the end. So this a lot of a
  1488. lot of costs you have to carry and it
  1489. would be great if the government
  1490. would foster that would support this on
  1491. their end. that everybody can take
  1492. his own responsibility and invest
  1493. >> invest his own money and do a
  1494. small piece and if we do all a small
  1495. piece we get also a huge one in total.

  1497. Chilean
  1498. poet which have this verse which is a
  1499. small small people in different parts
  1500. doing small things can change the world
  1501. >> so maybe it can be
