  3. pleasure to have Sherin Gar or a
  4. classmates in the master in renewable
  5. energy at Tubin. And today we're
  6. going to explore the intersection of
  7. a political scientist with now technical
  8. background. It's so many things to
  9. talk about in energy especially now with
  10. the situation in Middle East in
  11. Central Europe. yeah we're happy
  12. we're very happy to have you here and
  13. yeah we have too many questions today.

  32. >> and you only have three masters. So
  33. >> yeah. So
  34. maybe we could start for your
  35. professional journey and educational
  36. journey. How what was your motivation to
  37. study political science and how did you
  38. get in energy?
  39. >> Yeah. Yeah. Sure. well actually I am
  40. have always been a deeply political
  41. person. so I was really interested
  42. in knowing more about political
  43. developments
  44. and international relations
  45. and u geopolitical shifts. so from
  46. the very beginning it was really clear
  47. to me that I want to study political
  48. science and since I was really
  49. interested in knowing more about
  50. political developments in the Middle
  51. East and North Africa region I also
  52. started to study middle eastern
  53. studies. so this is the
  54. combination and of course energy
  55. security is an really important and
  56. really crucial role when talking
  57. about global politics. So I
  58. actually was interested to know
  59. more about about all this
  60. geopolitical shifts and in recent
  61. years the agenda has shifted more
  62. towards climate action, climate
  63. protection and integration of renewables
  64. into the system and that really
  65. inspired me to know more about the
  66. technical issues and the technical
  67. and the economic dimension of
  68. renewables. and then I started
  69. with my post-graduate studies at
  70. the technical university because I
  71. believe that it's really important to
  72. have this bigger picture. It's not
  73. really enough to just focus on the
  74. technical dimension but it's also about
  75. the whole geopolitical picture.
  76. >> Yeah. And what was the first like
  77. news or or data that you saw like an
  78. this is important topic like because
  79. energy it's u like transversal sector
  80. but it's highly geopolitical
  81. >> yeah so what did you see there like was
  82. it gas oil or something in particular or
  83. >> it was it was all of that. It
  84. was of course gas. Oil especially
  85. when you think about the Mina region I
  86. mean yeah oil gas plays a really
  87. important role and for me it's about
  88. energy security and we have a lot of
  89. questions around that. now the
  90. energy and climate policy of the EU is
  91. very much shaped by these geopolitical
  92. shifts and developments we see
  93. especially after the Russian
  94. invasion of Ukraine. there are a
  95. lot of questions around energy security
  96. and I think this is this is really
  97. important to bear in mind also
  98. when talking about industrial
  99. decarbonization.
  100. >> Yeah, we're going to go.
  101. >> Yeah.
  102. I and before we get into it, I just
  103. have a question. It's a curiosity
  104. question that I have. What people do at
  105. Ministry of Defense? when you I
  106. mean I can understand when when you have
  107. a war going on but apart from that what
  108. is going on there?
  109. >> Well, it's about analyzing and
  110. monitoring of political developments and
  111. then also in knowing if there are
  112. any kind of risks. so it's about also
  113. risk assessment. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah.
  114. It's also about writing reports, you
  115. know, and all that.
  116. >> Watching news.
  117. >> Yeah.
  118. >> Yeah. Sure. Sure. Yeah.
  119. >> What did you imagine? Like
  120. >> watch a lot of Netflix show.

  122. >> People with their fancy I don't know
  123. goggles or something. People doing so
  124. many stuff. So I was like maybe you have
  125. something interesting anecdote to share
  126. as well. What if defense is
  127. >> everything is under the wrap?
  128. >> Yeah. how do you think that this mix
  129. of engineering and knowledge in Middle
  130. East especially have influenced your
  131. your work now in alapier because we
  132. didn't mention but now you are part of
  133. the alapier here in Austria as a big
  134. intensity industry. So
  135. >> how do you think that this knowledge
  136. have influenced your action in
  137. Austropia?
  138. >>.
  139. >> And also a bit about Austropia.
  140. >> Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Maybe to start
  141. Austropia and then the influence of your
  142. knowledge.
  143. >> yeah sure. Austropia has 23
  144. members. they're the big names like
  145. Hansel Lensing Mi. they are part of
  146. of the of the of Austria which is
  147. association of the Austrian paper
  148. industry. I am responsible for the
  149. energy and climate policy. so you
  150. know all aspects all but also
  151. technical issues and decarbonization
  152. strategies all all that and how
  153. how my studies have shaped my work
  154. now answering that question I think
  155. as I've already mentioned it's about I
  156. believe it's about the broader
  157. picture and to have also knowledge
  158. about the geopolitics because this
  159. shifts we currently
  160. we are currently witnessing really
  161. affect also the Austrian energy and
  162. climate policy. so I think this
  163. combination is really really
  164. important to have. and then of
  165. course the technical aspect it's
  166. really important because if you don't
  167. have that background it makes really
  168. it makes it really difficult to
  169. understand things around the
  170. emission rate system and all the
  171. different laws. issued by the EU but
  172. there are also a very big law for
  173. example on a national level so I
  174. think it's it's this this mixture is
  175. really really important to
  176. have yeah
  177. >> what have surprised you more in EU
  178. policy in terms of industry
  179. decarbonization because you are
  180. analyzing policy so what have surprised
  181. you more
  182. >> so the needs and the
  183. challenges of the industry sector
  184. they were not that new to me because
  185. a couple of years ago I was working for
  186. the Austrian Ministry of foreign
  187. affairs at the department of trade
  188. relations and I was involved in all
  189. the issues on targeting the needs
  190. and the challenges of the industry had
  191. also contact of course with
  192. with the industry representatives also
  193. with the chamber of commerce and
  194. all that. So, so I knew some issues
  195. but I was not really aware that we
  196. have such a big baby industry in
  197. Austria and of course I knew
  198. like some some companies. Yeah. But I
  199. was not aware that we have this big
  200. industry and I was not aware that the
  201. baby industry has some efforts in
  202. decarbonization and that that was
  203. really new to me and I think that's
  204. something I really see as really
  205. positive. so for example there is a
  206. net zero road map. so the
  207. Austrian paper industry wants to
  208. become net zero but by 2050 which is in
  209. line with the European goal there.
  210. This road map like draws on how how
  211. it wants to achieve how the industry
  212. wants to achieve this goal and I
  213. think that's really really interesting.
  214. So this this is yeah this is actually
  215. what also fascinates me. It's really
  216. >> Yeah. You're thinking out loud that why
  217. paper industry is so big in Austria.
  218. Maybe because you like paperwork.
  219. Because
  220. >> we are making a lot of things now and
  221. everything is in paper. So
  222. >> Yeah. Yeah. Exactly.
  223. >> No, no, it's it's because
  224. >> Yeah. But just to tell you the
  225. background, it's because of the forest.
  226. It's because so yeah if also in the
  227. countries where you have forest there
  228. there the paper industry
  229. >> is Austria the third largest paper
  230. producer in EU.
  231. >> Oh I don't know if it's the third
  232. largest but it's one of the very of
  233. the larger ones. Yeah. So we have also
  234. Sweden, Finland, Germany but Austria
  235. is definitely is really really
  236. strong. Yeah. And many of these
  237. companies are Austrian companies
  238. having like sites also in
  239. other countries. Yeah.
  240. >> And what is the energy mix scenario for
  241. the paper industry in Austria? What kind
  242. of energy that they are using?
  243. >> it's a biomass. It's a really high
  244. share is biomass around 70% is biomass.
  245. so there is already already
  246. very high share of renewables which is
  247. really really good and when talking
  248. about decarbonization of course
  249. electrification will play an important
  250. role. So yeah there there are a lot of
  251. investments also on that and biomass
  252. might play more bigger role in
  253. future and yeah we will see gas
  254. will remain important
  255. >> what is the percentage of
  256. electrification that already being done
  257. in Austria for the paper industry
  258. >> you mean the electrification already
  259. already done
  260. >> yet there there's a lot of
  261. electrification done in the in the last
  262. years combining with heat pumps.
  263. Heat pumps play an important role in the
  264. electrification process.
  265. >> Is there some technical barrier that you
  266. are observing to phase out the gas to
  267. electrify the mills or
  268. >> Yeah. Yeah. the Austrian paper
  269. industry is really energy
  270. intensive and not all not
  271. everything can be decarbon
  272. decarbonized by electrification.
  273. So this is this is actually so of
  274. course there is a technical barrier but
  275. it's also a lot of a lot about the
  276. framework and also about energy security
  277. in terms of not only availability but
  278. also the costs. So also the costs
  279. play an important role because the
  280. prices are getting higher and higher and
  281. there's a problem related to the
  282. competitiveness. So if you compare it to
  283. to other if you compare the Austrian
  284. situation to other countries in
  285. Europe where you have kind of
  286. subsidies on energy prices the
  287. Austrian industry has
  288. challenges when it comes to the
  289. competitiveness. So, so there are more
  290. cost barriers or more technical
  291. so technical is physical
  292. >> it's it's tough actually because not
  293. because of the energy in intensity and
  294. not everything can be just electrified
  295. you need like biomass you need
  296. gas you need something like that so it's
  297. kind of both actually yeah
  298. >> I want to ask you like the role of
  299. aopia so it also to steer There are 25
  300. members, 25 paper producing companies.
  301. So, Ostropia the usual role is that they
  302. steer the industry where it will be
  303. moving.
  304. >> Exactly. Yeah. And there there are
  305. different decarbonization strategies
  306. and but of course I cannot talk about
  307. them now but there's a clear road
  308. map on how to achieve also carbon
  309. neutrality. So there are a lot of
  310. efforts done here.
  311. >> Okay. Maybe there is a website to
  312. review the goals.
  313. >> Yeah, of course there's Yeah, exactly.
  314. And there is also you will find the
  315. road map so the description
  316. >> it's Yeah. So there's a lot about F
  317. switch and then maybe I can add here
  318. some some points carbon capture
  319. for example will also play play a big
  320. role and it's really important
  321. >> of serving in this industry. so
  322. because as I told you biomass is
  323. really important plays a big
  324. role and yeah but there is the bioCC
  325. the biocarbon capture that means you
  326. can capture the biogenic
  327. >> CO2
  328. no not with plants there's yeah the
  329. infrastructure still still we need just
  330. we still need the infrastructure and the
  331. paper industry has a lot has a huge
  332. potential on that. but of course we
  333. will have to see how how the
  334. infrastructure and how the there
  335. will be like the legal framework for
  336. that. So we have but the commission
  337. in the commission has issued and
  338. published that it that it's really u
  339. welcoming carbon capture
  340. measures and yeah and negative yeah
  341. negative emissions. So bioCCC would lead
  342. into negative emissions. So and the
  343. paper industry actually has a really big
  344. role on that. Do you have a kind of goal
  345. part of the road map to 2050
  346. >> the carbon capture it's a main role
  347. in on that or it's more electrification
  348. like what is the
  349. >> it's both it's it's the combination yeah
  350. it's the combination yeah because
  351. it's it's not you need actually you need
  352. the whole system for decarbonizing
  353. and it's really depends on the
  354. different meals it depends on the
  355. processes so yeah but of course
  356. it's it's both of them and bioCC
  357. the baby industry industry compared
  358. to other industries really has has
  359. an like a role that not other industries
  360. have because because the industry
  361. uses biomass and biogenic sources and
  362. so this is then possible technically
  363. possible. the name bio carbon capture
  364. >> what is
  365. >> biogenic biogenic
  366. >> so what is different with other
  367. technologies or why you choose this one
  368. >> so there when talking about
  369. carbon capture there are two
  370. technologies it's the carbon capture and
  371. storage yeah and then afterwards
  372. also there are discussions and debates
  373. on how to like build up carbon
  374. markets this
  375. This is in discussion actually. And then
  376. you have biocc which is related to
  377. biomass. So this is this is the yeah
  378. exactly fuel.
  379. >> Yeah.
  380. >> It's because of the feed stock.
  381. >> It's about Yes.
  382. >> It's a special technology for this.
  383. >> Yes. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. And carbon
  384. capture is really relevant for the steel
  385. industry for example. I was just asking
  386. that with Ostropia are you also
  387. in talking to other such consortium
  388. in other countries do you?
  389. >> Yeah of course of course there is
  390. the confederation of the European
  391. baby industries and we are a member
  392. and we always have an exchange
  393. with the other paper industries
  394. because we have similar
  395. challenges. It's really important to you
  396. know to exchange and also to have a
  397. kind of advocacy strategy together.
  398. >> Do you think which of the countries you
  399. will say that already have gone ahead in
  400. the transition of paper in pulp industry
  401. that they already been able to electrify
  402. or functioning as a role model?
  403. >> Yeah. Well, I think Austria is also I
  404. mean Austria is on a good way. we
  405. have also Sweden which is also
  406. well actually all of them all all
  407. current but it's more the
  408. Scandinavian countries and Austria also
  409. as well and Germany they're also putting
  410. efforts on that. Yeah, but I can
  411. talk about the Austrian paper industry
  412. not that much about the other
  413. European paper industries.
  414. >> because we are focused more on
  415. the central and eastern European and we
  416. we want to establish Austria and I think
  417. Austria is pretty much the role model
  418. for the region.
  419. >> Yeah.
  420. >> And while I'm doing the thesis with my
  421. topic is also pretty much the same.
  422. So Austria had been able to and I'm
  423. comparing Austria with Romania and
  424. Poland. okay.
  425. >> because Austria is also fortunate
  426. with its energy mix. So it gets a lot
  427. of electricity which is there to be. So
  428. >> and this is part of the thesis.
  429. >> Great.
  430. >> Yeah. I that the electricity
  431. mix and the share of renewables is
  432. really high in Austria. It's around I
  433. think 87 88% which is really really
  434. high. So yeah.
  435. >> Yeah. taking the CE region reality.
  436. do you think this coal boilers can be
  437. retrofitted to electrification in the
  438. paper industry?
  439. >> yeah, in Austria coal pilots
  440. do not really or the role is really
  441. diminished. They're not really coal
  442. pilots. Maybe it's I don't know one two
  443. or something like that but it's it's
  444. more gas spoilers actually and
  445. processes are really energy
  446. intensive. it's it's h
  447. sometimes it depends on the processes
  448. but sometimes it's not really that easy
  449. to move on to electrification.
  450. but in the case of the other
  451. C countries I
  452. believe it's about the mixture. It's
  453. about having like maybe biomes actually
  454. also is a good example also for
  455. other paper mills in the region.
  456. and yeah electrification of course
  457. and then we will see what what role
  458. renewable gases will play. So
  459. hydrogen for example but this is
  460. something we don't know yet. but
  461. by the way bio gas is also really
  462. important in the case of the Austrian
  463. paper industry because biomass
  464. is used there is also
  465. sometimes surplus heat and electricity
  466. which can be fed into the grid. so
  467. this is also something really
  468. positive. So that means the Austrian
  469. paper industry is not only using
  470. energy but it's also producing and
  471. feeding into the grid.
  472. >> So it's possible to retrofit coal
  473. boilers to biomass and then to leap frog
  474. to electrification right. So could be a
  475. a way.
  476. >> Yeah. Yeah. theoretically but you
  477. know when it comes really to technical
  478. issues I think you we have to look on
  479. the on the exact processes and on the
  480. meals and there are a lot of things
  481. to look on
  482. >> super old
  483. >> yeah they can yes exactly and then I
  484. mean it's also about the framework not
  485. talking about the coil boilers but
  486. about gas now because this is what in
  487. Austria is the debate or the
  488. discussion how to replace gas
  489. and not coil anymore. Gas will remain
  490. as something that will be that you will
  491. need. Yeah, there there are a lot of
  492. questions on that especially because
  493. also the comm the commission the
  494. European Commission has
  495. announced that it wants to phase out
  496. Russian gas of course by 2030 also
  497. including LG and so all these things
  498. have to be also included into the
  499. decarbonization strategies yeah of the
  500. industrial sector. Sharing you've
  501. worked so much into the geopolitics of
  502. of stuff and energy is getting more and
  503. more geopolitical and there are a lot of
  504. risk around this region and you're
  505. currently dealing with the EU Mena
  506. hydrogen corridor. What what do you
  507. think how it's coming along and
  508. what are your thoughts on it?
  509. >> Yeah, exactly. hydrogen is a really
  510. big topic and there are a lot of
  511. debates also on that and but
  512. before answering your question I think
  513. it's I believe it's really
  514. important to mention that we are
  515. now witnessing this global
  516. shift towards fragmentation
  517. and also kind of delization
  518. and there are a lot of questions on
  519. energy security so all that is related
  520. to energy security of course. and
  521. so yeah so we have a lot of
  522. challenges also in terms of the
  523. competition between the US and
  524. China and we see that China is
  525. plays really important role when it
  526. comes to critical minerals but
  527. also when it comes to manufacturing
  528. for example electrolyers and all that.
  529. So, so yeah, so there there's a let's
  530. say a challenging global order right
  531. now. Yeah. And green hydrogen
  532. would of course also reshuffle maybe the
  533. global order because currently when when
  534. you when you look at the different
  535. strategies on hydrogen, you see that
  536. almost every country has a green
  537. hydrogen strategy. This is also really
  538. interesting and many countries want to
  539. be exporters. So this is this is also
  540. interesting.
  541. >> Yeah, it's the inter European Union of
  542. course according to the
  543. publications of the commission the
  544. strategy imports will be really
  545. important but it will also
  546. raise some some questions and
  547. some risks as well. So green hydrogen
  548. there are a lot of debates on
  549. importing green hydrogen from the
  550. Mina region. So for example Tunisia,
  551. Algeria and the also the Austrian
  552. government has signed a memorandum of
  553. understanding yeah between Tunisia or
  554. with no so with Tunisia and with
  555. Algeria. so there there are of kind
  556. of plans to import hydrogen but I
  557. think it's really important
  558. to look also on the risk side because
  559. if you look on political developments
  560. in the Mina region there a lot of
  561. questions around and also tensions
  562. around land use and there is a water
  563. scarcity and there yeah there are
  564. a lot of risks
  565. and the EU for example has also
  566. has already an import strategy which
  567. is fine but a Austria has not hasn't
  568. an import strategy. So it's we will
  569. see how the strategy will look like
  570. but I think it's the key is the divers
  571. diversification.
  572. So I believe it's about having
  573. different hydrogen suppliers.
  574. Exactly.
  575. >> Yeah.
  576. replicate the situation now with Russia.
  577. >> Yes. Exactly.
  578. >> Yes. Exactly. Exactly. And I believe
  579. it's not not only about that. I think
  580. it's also really important to look
  581. at the necessities within these
  582. countries and also the

  588. share of renewables right now. So, so I
  589. think this is all this this have have to
  590. be taken into consideration when
  591. you're talking about exports
  592. >> and how do you think that influence
  593. the Israel Hamas war now in the imports
  594. from from Mena region what's risk can be
  595. and if there are some plan B's
  596. >> the actually there are a lot of
  597. direct but also indirect effects
  598. so indirect effects are the volatile
  599. markets. So of course we see that
  600. very quickly on the energy prices. So
  601. and then when talking about
  602. the direct effects there there
  603. were you can of course remember
  604. the tensions between Iran.
  605. there are still tensions between Israel
  606. and Iran and there were some some fears
  607. actually that Iran could or that this
  608. could affect the strait of hormones and
  609. then the LNG's supplies. so of
  610. course this is this is a risk and
  611. then also when we talk about hydrogen
  612. there's there might also be a
  613. competition between different
  614. exporting countries like
  615. Algeria and Morocco there already
  616. some tensions and then remains
  617. we will see how how hydrogen will also
  618. like have an influence kind of
  619. influence on that.
  620. >> So the green the hydrogen corridors are
  621. also from men region to Europe and
  622. that's from by the sea or on land.
  623. >> Well also by the sea but pipelines
  624. this is and Austria will is supposed
  625. to play a major role on the south H2
  626. corridor. So this is yeah this is a
  627. corridor that should connect North
  628. African countries with Europe and
  629. there

  631. coming to Austria and Austria would in
  632. this case play a major role because it's
  633. it's linked and yeah and

  635. right now on the infrastructure and also
  636. on financing actually the

  669. and there's the critical the critical
  670. minerals act aiming targeting this
  671. this issue. It's of course it's a
  672. challenge. and also when talking
  673. about lithium from Serbia or from
  674. Czecha, I think I believe it's it's
  675. important to involve the
  676. communities as well and that and it's
  677. important that they kind of benefit from
  678. from this huge project because you
  679. know it's it shouldn't be like the
  680. elites only benefit. It's like and
  681. of course like it's important to involve
  682. them also in the plans and
  683. yeah and there are also
  684. environmental issues as well and
  685. so yeah I it can be a positive step
  686. but it's always I believe about
  687. the framework and how to yeah to
  688. connect with the communities
  689. but now right now we are really
  690. dependent actually on China on that but
  691. on South Africa as well but on China
  692. really I mentioned already the
  693. electrolyers
  694. many of them come from from China but
  695. also when we talk about PV for example
  696. it's everything so yeah so
  697. I believe it's diversification also
  698. in terms of critical minerals is
  699. essential but it's not that easy to
  700. have yeah dependencies yeah exactly
  701. Exactly. Exactly. And you have you don't
  702. have them everywhere. So you so also
  703. with renewables we will have kind of
  704. dependencies on
  705. >> several countries.

  728. >> And regarding the US and European deal
  729. that it was made in the last weeks I
  730. I think what are your thoughts about
  731. it related to energy imports right? What
  732. are your thoughts about it? well
  733. actually it's really kind of
  734. problematic because currently the US
  735. is an important exporter of
  736. LNG. Yeah, of course. but this
  737. dimension I think it was the agreement
  738. included I think 750 billions
  739. have to be invested in gas and oil
  740. coming from the US and this is really
  741. really challenging and there are a
  742. lot of experts who said said that
  743. this is actually not feasible and that
  744. would mean that we have to import all of
  745. our energy from the US which
  746. wouldn't make sense and of course also
  747. looking at the US from
  748. the point of from or in terms of
  749. trade challenges and c
  750. customs and all that issues. It's
  751. really problematic and the USA could
  752. also use it as a kind of tool, you
  753. know, for achieving own interests and
  754. things like that. So, so it's I believe
  755. it's really a problematic deal. Yeah.
  756. >> For Europe.
  757. >> For Europe. Yeah.
  758. >> You would say that it was not a good
  759. deal for Europe.
  760. >> No, I Yes. I agree. It's not a good
  761. tool for Europe. Yeah.

  768. Austria and EU, right? Like there's so

  770. about the EU carbon policies and
  771. how are they treating the energy

  773. offshoring so that the industry does not

  775. that basically that we are having with
  776. EU carbon policies
  777. >> and is a do you see it as as a threat or
  778. not?
  779. >> Well that's a good question. I
  780. have already mentioned the
  781. competitiveness of European
  782. industries and of course carbon
  783. policy is something very much linked to
  784. that also on the one hand of course it's
  785. important to have decarbonization goals
  786. I believe but it's important to
  787. involve the industry as well and I think
  788. this is something the commission is
  789. right now doing more and more. but
  790. there are a lot of challenges in
  791. terms of carbon leakage and yeah
  792. and therefore we have it is
  793. one the emission trade system one with a
  794. free allocations for some industries and
  795. we have also now candidate not under the
  796. free allowance rate. No, they are they
  797. are yeah they receive six or 20.
  798. >> This is and this is the challenge. So we
  799. will come to the challenge because the
  800. to the challenges because the EU
  801. wants to phase out the free
  802. allocations by 2030. So there will
  803. be less and less free allocations and
  804. this is a huge challenge for the
  805. industry because u right now it's a
  806. good measure for against carbon
  807. leakage but it's unclear what will
  808. happen after 2030 and this is this is
  809. a big risk in terms of CBAM there's a
  810. lot of criticism on CBAM because many
  811. industries think industry
  812. industrial sector think that it does not
  813. really avoid carbon leakage and so there
  814. maybe there should be some
  815. adaptations on there there will
  816. also be some adaptations because the EDS
  817. system will be revised next year by
  818. the EU commission so there is the EDS
  819. revision and CBM also will be kind of re
  820. revised so there are a lot of debates on
  821. that yeah but currently the industry
  822. really or the paper industry really
  823. has really challenges. What what are
  824. the target for the paper and pulp
  825. industry paper industry in Austria
  826. >> to yeah to have the free
  827. allocations also after 2030 because
  828. because there's still a need of
  829. decarbonization and now with the free
  830. allocations there yeah it's it's easier
  831. but without it's we will have a
  832. lot of comp competitiveness issues. The
  833. fee allowance is incremental, right?
  834. Like how it starts with 5% and then
  835. >> Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly.
  836. >> Speaking about policy also, Austria
  837. is really promoting energy
  838. communities.
  839. >>.
  840. >> So do you think that there is a space
  841. for high energy intensity industries
  842. to be part of energy communities?
  843. yeah theoretically it
  844. could be it's it's but it really
  845. depends on the framework. now there
  846. is a new law on the electricity
  847. system. It's the electricity
  848. on a national level level and it's
  849. now being revised by also
  850. stakeholders and the law would make
  851. make like direct clients possible and to
  852. peer-to-peer u contracts things like
  853. that and this could make that possible
  854. but it's really theoretical now. Yeah.
  855. So we so it really depends on the
  856. framework on the legal framework and
  857. on how it's going going to be
  858. implemented.

  860. something that like it is
  861. something that theoretically is possible
  862. but theoretically so yeah
  863. >> but it's more possible for any
  864. other industry for sure because paper
  865. and is going to use more and more heat
  866. pumps industrial heat pumps and

  868. be part of energy communities. Yeah,

  872. there discussing about AI for

  876. of our panelist Barat about the
  877. apprehension of AI in industries and why
  878. but what do you think about how
  879. what is the role of AI and other other
  880. advanced technologies for industries
  881. especially also for paper and pulp
  882. industries.
  883. >> Well AI plays already plays an
  884. important and crusher role and will play
  885. also. Yeah, it really it really can help
  886. in different on different aspects. So,
  887. AI will and there there are a
  888. lot of companies really
  889. implementing AI tools and this is this
  890. is the future actually and I would say
  891. in every industry sector but of
  892. course using AI will means also that
  893. we will be in need of more
  894. electricity
  895. and more energy. So this raises again
  896. the question. So this is a risk as well
  897. but I believe that it's there
  898. are a lot of possibilities coming with
  899. AI. So
  900. >> yeah so we have to invest more and more
  901. in renewables but that means that we
  902. will also be kind of dependent
  903. also.
  904. >> are there any particular technologies
  905. that you are seeing in the paper
  906. industry? You mean AI technologies
  907. implemented?
  908. >> I think there is some
  909. really related to paper
  910. manufacturing. what exactly? I'm
  911. not aware of it but it but there are
  912. already already some tools being used
  913. >> and you as industry see some risks
  914. in terms of data protection for
  915. example from the industry with AI
  916. >> of course. Yeah. Data protection is
  917. also an important issue. Yeah. so
  918. it's about combining them how
  919. to use AI without losing data. So
  920. yeah and they're they're they're like we
  921. will see depends on the tools
  922. but still there are tools available as
  923. well that's that could be used. Yeah
  924. >> it's so new for now but it's being
  925. observed.

  927. thoughts and how do you see the future?
  928. This question is like to mention one
  929. policy that could make heavy industry
  930. net zero feasible. What would you do?
  931. one policy.
  932. Well, I really can't can't mention
  933. just one policy because it's about the
  934. whole framework, it's about
  935. right now we have many strategies but we
  936. but it's about the implementation and
  937. it's about having the right
  938. infrastructure and for example coming
  939. back to hydrogen. So now we're
  940. talking about hydrogen but there's still
  941. the infrastructure is still missing and
  942. there are a lot of questions also around
  943. how the production costs will be covered
  944. and the hydrogen is really
  945. expensive still and so there are a
  946. lot of challenges that should be
  947. solved by policy makers and so it's
  948. really important to have to
  949. the overall framework. so I
  950. would say it's about the infrastructure
  951. and about the availability and also
  952. about the prices also on the end
  953. of the day when it comes of when it
  954. comes to electricity and
  955. energy.
  956. >> Okay. So it could be summarize the
  957. infrastructure and the coordination
  958. between multiples agendas
  959. agendas and policies right
  960. >> yeah you can summarize it like that
  961. >> and do you think that they are aligned
  962. all the policies in this direction of
  963. being net zero to 24
  964. >> no I don't think that look at the
  965. European hydrogen strategy this goal is
  966. not here yet because we still have some
  967. challenges And there there is a recent
  968. study I have read on actually
  969. arguing that the commission has to
  970. revise its goals on that. It is it is
  971. about the availability of renewables
  972. also other other alternatives actually
  973. to gas for example and we don't have
  974. them yet.
  975. >> Okay. So these are these are the
  976. challenges
  977. >> and your and your closing thoughts
  978. Sharon because you have done you have
  979. been a political scientist yourself and
  980. then you entered the field of energy.
  981. What about the other one who what one
  982. piece of advice that you will give to
  983. other political scientists who want to
  984. get into the energy field? yeah, I
  985. think it's really important to
  986. talk to maybe represent industry
  987. repres representatives but also to
  988. policy makers to understand the whole
  989. to understand or to grasp
  990. actually the bigger picture and I think
  991. it's important to know what's going
  992. on in terms of geopolitical
  993. shifts and things like that
  994. linked to energy security and then of
  995. course the technical dimension is
  996. really important. So yeah and then
  997. to get this insights into
  998. technical and economic issues related
  999. to energy. So it's a mixture actually
  1000. and I really believe that it's about
  1001. this bigger picture. It's not only
  1002. especially now especially in these
  1003. times it's not only to have this
  1004. technical background which is of course
  1005. really important as well and when
  1006. dealing with energy and climate
  1007. policies it's important to have this
  1008. geopolitical picture as well.
  1009. >> Yeah actually how was for how was it
  1010. for you to study a technical master
  1011. having a political science background?
  1012. Well, it was really technical,
  1013. >> it was like, okay, it's
  1014. interesting, but it's too technical, but
  1015. I'm fully aware that you have you
  1016. have to have this understandings of, you
  1017. know, of the technical dimension because
  1018. if if you don't know, then it's
  1019. really it's not Yeah, it's hard to you
  1020. know, work on energy and climate
  1021. policies.
  1022. So that's why we with energy bridge what
  1023. we are trying to do is a lot of the time
  1024. the policy makers they don't understand
  1025. the technicalities.
  1026. >> Yeah
  1027. >> they need to be together in on one place
  1028. with the technical innovators and so
  1029. that the policies are in line with the
  1030. technicality.
  1031. >> Yeah I agree

  1035. about everything is about
  1036. geopolitics. So, yeah. No, no, there
  1037. isn't something I'd like to share,
  1038. but again, I think that we're

  1040. time in terms of different aspects
  1041. also. when you look at the EU
  1042. US deal that's another topic but yeah
  1043. also there are a lot of challenges and
  1044. so on and so forth and we have a lot of
  1045. we have the war now going on in
  1046. Russia so there there's a
  1047. lot
